The 90s was a time of Girl Power and showing the world what you were made of – with a little help from some kickass role models, that is. We’ve pulled together a few of our Girl Power icons known for their butt-kicking, take-no-prisoners attitude. Who were yours?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
In every generation there is one…who can put evil in its place whilst pulling off heels.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Who didn’t try and use a Sabrina-inspired love spell on their crush? Just us? Oh..
Clarissa (from Clarissa Explains it All)
Clarissa was a fast-talking, no nonsense kind of gal, and we could all take away some advice for dealing with the boy next door from every episode (and also how to keep your younger brother out of your hair).
Cher (from Clueless)
If there’s one thing Cher’s not Clueless about, it’s clothes. She was our undisputed 90s fashion queen with outfits to die for (and someone to pay for it all!)
Britney Spears
Britney’s explosion onto the pop scene brought with it a wave of enthusiasm for nailing her dance routines, all whilst making your dreams come true as a popstar. We still love you, Britney!
Princess Jasmine
Way before Elsa’s disapproval of her sister getting married so early, Princess Jasmine was representin’ for all the girls who wanted to be princesses on their own terms (all the while dripping in bling).
Kimberly (Pink Power Ranger)
Every 90s girl who wanted to be a gymnast probably wanted to be Kimberly too; not only could she do a double back flip and shoot a pretty cool bow, but she could help save the world in her spare time.
Tia & Tamera (from Sister, Sister)
Sister, Sister – a show about two girls finding out they’re twins – was a smash hit due to the bubbly personalities and sassy attitudes of its leads, Tia and Tamera. The show also led to many awkward and fruitless searches for long lost twins…
Princess Diana
Princess Diana was nothing if not the epitome of elegance, and her charitable work made her the perfect 90s role model for girls everywhere. Truly the People’s Princess.
The Spice Girls
Of course you can’t spell Girl Power without Geri, Mel B, Mel C, Victoria and Emma. There was truly a Spice Girl to represent every kind of girl, and we all learnt a valuable lesson about empowering ourselves. You go, girls!
