Let’s be honest, we all went through an orange face, smudged lipstick and messy mascara stage. Whether you overdid your blusher, put too much green eyeshadow on or tried to copy a celebs style and got it totally wrong, every girl growing up in the 00s went through a bad makeup stage.
Nowadays, teenage girls will never know our pain and embarrassment, looking back at old photos and wondering how our make-up went so wrong! From YouTube tutorials to blog tips, teenage girls now know all the tricks on how to perfect their makeup. From an Anastasia Beverly Hills creamy contour look to a red, sultry eye – that somehow doesn’t even look sore- the young girls of today will never experience that bad make-up stage that we did in the early 00s!
However, it is not all bad news. We have put together 21 beauty products which will send you on a trip down memory lane! If you were a young girl growing up in the early 00s, you are guaranteed to have tried some – or most – of these beauty products!
1. Juicy Tube
These things tasted soooo nice and they always added what we thought was a gorgeous glossy finish! Looking back now, our lips did not look as good as we remembered!
2. Frizz Ease
Whether you had frizzy locks or you didn’t, every girl had one of these hair serums – they were the secret to slick 00s hair! John Freida was our life saviour!
3. Highlighting kits
Did you want those signature 00s highlights but as a kid, you couldn’t afford to go to the hairdressers? This was the answer. We didn’t care if our hair turned out looking like a zebra because L’Oreal ALWAYS had our backs with this kit.
4. Coloured mascara – for your hair!
If you were too edgy for those highlights, then this coloured mascara worked wonders on your hair! Whether it was blue or yellow you wanted in your hair, these kits did the job!
5. Proactiv
The go-to make for any teenager whose skin went through a bad stage of acne. Despite the red burn these products left behind, I wouldn’t leave the house for a sleepover without these essentials.
6. Hair Bobble
This weird looking scrunchy was all the rage back in the day. Despite the colour of them never actually being your hair colour, they always added some kind of volume to your ponytail.
7. CHI straighteners
Sizzle. Needless to say, these bad boys definitely did the job. Although we were left with hardly any hair after a session with these, we certainly had poker straight strands.
8. Bling for your body
Yes, this was a thing! And as tacky as they sound now if you wore body bling, you were guaranteed to be one of the most fashionable in the class. Whether you jazzed up your belly button or stuck a few on your arm, these things really blinged up an outfit.
9. Maybelline mascara
There was something about this mascara that meant you couldn’t put it down before applying at least 5 coats. In fact, I used to just keep applying until my arm ached and my lashes looked like falling off.
10. Lip Pulp
In the days before the Kardashians, lip plumping was still all the rage. It was almost a crime to apply this directly onto lips without covering the skin around your mouth to create the impression of much fuller lips. Trust me, it worked!
11. Urban Decay Marsh Mallow
You know that urge you get to eat a bath bomb when it smells so nice, this is the exact same! We all felt simply irresistible when we used this because it smelled so sweet!
12. Britney’s perfume
Britney was the ultimate female icon back in the early 00s so which better scent to wear than the blonde bombshell herself! I remember looking to buy this in the shop and the perfume lady described it as smelling like cupcakes and sweets. SOLD!
13. Bad gal liner
There wasn’t one girl who put this eyeliner on and didn’t feel like they were channelling Nicki Minaj – or back in the day Avril Lavigne. The more you put on, the worse you were!
14. Painful bobbles
Wearing one of these was the ultimate sacrifice of fashion over pain. You knew that at any moment these things could make a knot so big in your hair that you would never be able to get it out without screaming. They make me tense just looking at them!
15. Super large clips
If you ever struggle to keep your hair in place with the bobby pins of today, these huge clips are guaranteed to do the job! Yes – they were painful when trying to push them in to secure, but it was all part of the look. Not only were they super good at keeping hair in one position, they also came in multiple colours!
16. Victoria Secret sprays
Walking into Victoria Secret was always heaven as every store smelled like these. Whether you used the body lotion or the fragrance mist, these would leave you smelling sweet and fresh all day! Is it bad I still use these?!
17. Nail glitter
Your nails were never finished without glitter on them! Because we weren’t allowed to wear polish in school, whoever dared to put some on was not only super fashionable but also very rebellious!
18. Face glitter
We were very pleased to see that in the last few years glitter has become fashionable again! And why ever not! From face sparkles to body glow, glitter in all different colours is now extremely fashionable.
19. Fake tan
Fake tanning in your teenage years was always a bit of a risk. Not once did it turn out right. From orange hands to streaky legs, I have been scarred so much from bad tanning experiences, I haven’t tried it since!
20. Razor
I remember getting my first razor and feeling like I had finally become an adult!
21. Dream Matte Mousse
This was the foundation which everyone wore back in the day! It was smooth to go on, came in all different colours and concealed every spot! I remember applying this nearly every break time in the school toilet mirrors. What was good about Dream Matte Mousse is that every time you got a bit of a tan on holiday you would have to go up a shade. Moving from opal to sand was a pretty big step.
Did you use any of these beauty product back in the day?!
