Kev Corbishley: Who is the Late Call the Midwife Star?

It’s now been a few months since the series 11 finale of Call the Midwife was aired, and we’re already missing the period drama. In that tense finale, we finally got to see the aftermath of the train crash that left Sister Julienne and Doctor Turner trapped.

Thankfully, everything turned out okay for the team at Nonnatus House. However, viewers were left confused when a tragedy was hinted at after the final scene had played.

So, who is Kev Corbishley, and what do we know about him?

Eagle-eyed Call the Midwife viewers will have seen a special title card displayed at the end of one of last month’s episodes. The card read “In memory of Kev Corbishley 1965 – 2022.” But who was Kev Corbishley?

In fact, Kev Corbishely was a beloved member of the crew behind Call the Midwife. In particular, Kev worked in the camera department as a standby rigger.

He worked on the series between 2020 and 2022, being a part of the Camera and Electrical Department for 15 episodes in series 9, 10, and 11.

Viewers took to Twitter to ask the crew of Call the Midwife who Kev Corbishley was. The official Twitter account of the beloved show responded to a fan: “A dearly beloved member of our crew who died very recently. He will be missed. xx” 

Twitter was then flooded with messages in praise of Kev and the other crew who work on Call the Midwife.

Messages read “What a wonderful show and how lucky we are to have it – thank you Heidi Thomas, cast and crew, and Kev Corbishley #CallTheMidwife” and “#RIP thoughts and prayers to all concerned.”

Call the Midwife Christmas Special

Call the Midwife fans will be happy that, as per tradition, the BBC period drama will be back for another special Christmas episode at the end of 2022.

After the dramatic events of the end of series 11, fans are speculating what the plot of the Christmas episode could be. However, we’ve been given a hint from none other than Helen George, who plays Trixie.

Fans will remember that Nurse Beatrix ‘Trixie’ Franklin left the show towards the end of series 11. Her character departed Nonnatus House to care for her terminally ill godmother in Portofino.

This was timed with actor Helen George’s pregnancy. She’s now had her baby, a girl called Lark who was born in November 2021.

So, could the well-loved character be back for the Christmas special?

In a recent interview, Helen George teased that that may, in fact, be the case.

She said: “We get the scripts a couple of weeks before we film them, so honestly I don’t really know.

Christmas is lovely for Trixie, there’s some lovely stuff going on. Heidi [Thomas, series creator] just writes so well for the character.

And there’s always a surprise – every series I go, ‘Oh my God, you’re kidding me, that’s going to happen to Trixie?’ So I think that’s what keeps the character kind of stretched.”

Helen George returning to Nonnatus House for the Christmas special also means fans will see more of her blossoming relationship with Matthew Aylward.

In series 11, Trixie entered a tentative relationship with Matthew, but this was cut short when Trixie departed for Italy.

Now, fans are hoping that we could finally see Trixie get lucky in her relationships. She almost found love with Tom Hereward but broke off her engagement at the last minute.

In a later season, she almost had success with Christopher, but again called off her relationship.

Helen George has previously commented on the joy of being able to film without restrictions again. Now that the actors are able to film without being two metres apart, Helen said it’s made doing intimate scenes easier.

She said: “We’re like ‘Nice to meet you, how do we do this?’ it’s so awkward, but you get on with it, it takes a minute to think ‘Oh, I should hold his hand?’.

It’s so nice now ­restrictions have lifted, we can actually get close, hug and do proper acting.”
