On her blog, Ree admitted that she had put on weight over the last three years, but calls herself a “lover of food and avoider of exercise.” She had an additional incentive to lose weight as she was attending her daughter’s wedding in May 2021.

She started her weight loss journey in January 2021, and by June she had lost 43 pounds. Six months later, that total came to an incredible 55 pounds. Now, the Pioneer Woman isn’t only much healthier, she now has bags of energy and has built muscle thanks to a weight-lifting regime.
Now, let’s dive into the details of exactly how Ree Drummond achieved her weight loss.
How Did She Do It?
When Ree decided in January 2021 that she wanted to do something about her weight, the first step was actually looking at calories.
For the first five months, she developed a habit of counting her calories every day as well as weighing her meals to make sure she was eating smaller portions.
But it wasn’t all about the food she was eating. Ree made an effort to get out and do exercise more than she was used to. Mainly, this took the form of 2 or 3 mile walks every day with her dogs.
However, Ree also did more intensive workouts including with a rowing machine.

She also started weight training. She started with basic lower body movements including lunges, squats, straight-leg deadlifts, and calf raises, using just 5 or 8-pound hand weights.
After these first five months of intensive training, Ree says, she was able to be a little less strict with her food and exercise over the summer, and hence her weight loss slowed over the second half of the year.
She says: “I was glad I’d been so strict for that first stage because it wound up being a nice crash course that equipped me going forward. Starting out with that discipline actually allowed me more freedom later in the process.”

Not only has Ree shared the details of her weight loss journey with millions of people, but she’s also shared her own tips for weight loss. So, what’s the secret?
She says that it’s not about ‘lifestyle changes’. Instead, the chef prefers to think of it as ‘perspective changes’.
Ree explains: “During the first five months (and in the ensuing months) of my journey, I experienced a seismic shift in my perspective of everything I’ve mentioned: Portion size, calories, daily movement, sitting vs. standing, protein percentage, muscle mass, wasted calories, and so on.
I think about all of those things totally differently now.”

But Ree stresses that she hasn’t completely cut out enjoyable, but unhealthy, foods from her diet. Instead, she’s just cut her portions and started exercising more – a simple recipe for huge weight loss.
She adds: “Today I feel stronger, more in balance (both physically and mentally), and I have more spring to my step. I am wearing clothes I wasn’t comfortable wearing a year ago, I feel better about the way I look, and I’m smiling more.”
