Dorien Edgar: Who Is the Alligator Hunter?

After starring in History’s hit show Swamp People, Dorien Edgar is building quite a fan base.

Now becoming one of the most popular characters on the show, Dorien has been wowing viewers with his hunting skills- but it seems he’s now unsure about whether he wants to start a new career.

Let’s get the lowdown on Dorien’s dilemma.

Dorien Edgar: Swamp People

Dorien is a member of the Edgar family, who are a LONG line of alligator hunters. It’s pretty big business apparently.

He’s the son of Dwaine Edgar, whose father is Daniel Edgar. Daniel is the head of the family, and he’s  responsible for the Edgars’ success in the world of alligator hunting.

The family have been the centre of the show Swamp People since 2010, which documents their alligator hunting and fishing in the Atchafalaya Basin in Louisiana.

Dorien Edgar is one of the youngest active members of the family (he’s in his late 20s FYI) and he’s been feeling the pressure to keep the family business going after all these years.

His grandad pushes Dorien hard to earn money for the business, which has left some viewers concerned about his place in the family.

One social media user wrote:

“Is it just me, or does Daniel push Dorien way too hard? #SwampPeople”.

But other followers have been much more interested in Dorien’s physique…

Another viewer wrote:

“Dorien Edgar is fine as AF #SwampPeople”.

Seems like he’s got some dedicated fans either way!

Stepping Back

He might be one of the OG characters of Swamp People, but Dorien has been increasingly torn between his family business and working elsewhere.

The Edgars’ alligator hunting wasn’t doing so well, so Dorien needed to think about how he was going to provide for his growing family.

In season 9 of the show, the alligator hunter had made a decision– and he knew he needed to follow the money.

“I’ve got to make some money. I love to be here and I want to be here but, where I’m at in my life, I need to make guaranteed money.”

He eventually went to work out in Texas and Oklahoma on the oil fields, and would send money home for his family.

But this hasn’t stop Dorien Edgar from returning home as often as he can. In fact, he made a comeback a couple of seasons later to help with the family business, and was soon at home in the swamp again!

However, it’s not super clear if Dorien will be continuing to divide his time between his oil field job and alligator hunting. He doesn’t tend to give interviews, so fans will have to keep watching to find out where Dorien ends up.

Success

Since the show debuted all those years ago, Dorien, Daniel, and the rest of the Edgar family have become local celebrities of sorts. And this has brought massive benefits to their alligator hunting business!

In an interview with Kreol magazine, head of the family Daniel reflected on the impact of the show so far:

The impact of Swamp People on our industry is colossal. The Creole and Cajun cultures are now known throughout the world.

The demand in alligator meat has skyrocketed, and that keeps the alligator farmers in business and at the same time immensely contributed to the sale of wild alligator meat. That helps to keep the wild alligator numbers steady.

I feel that, without the show, the wild alligator management plan would be in a disarray.”

So what’s next for the alligator hunters?

Well, they’re super keen for a new series, and it’s actually out right now on History.

Hopefully we’ll find out more about what Dorien’s up to…
