It’s safe to say that Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, has taken the world by storm.
If he’s not landing number one singles, he’s busy scoring parts in the likes of The Lion King and The Martian. Oh, and fathering some super cute kids along the way…
But what exactly do we know about Donald Glover Sr and his famous son?

Donald Glover’s dad is Donald Glover Sr, who used to work at an Air Force Base in California. And this is where Childish Gambino was actually born!
Donald’s mother is Beverley Glover, and is a retired day-care provider. They raised Donald in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Donald Glover Snr then switched careers to become a postal worker.
Beverley then gave birth to two more children; Stephen, who would later collaborate with Donald as a writer and producer, and daughter Brienne.

The family were devout Jehovah’s Witnesses during Donald’s childhood, so his upbringing was fairly strict.
Donald Glover’s dad and mum were keen to keep their children away from temptations of Satan… and apparently he came in many forms.
Without even a TV to reference, characters like Bart Simpson were only heard about at school.
Giving fans an insight into his early years, the rapper and actor said:
“My parents were like, Bart Simpson’s a bad influence….the Simpsons are no go.”
Early Career
Once Donald graduated from New York University, Donald started finding his feet in songwriting. He also dabbled in DJing for a while.
He continued to work on his writing until he caught the eye of producer David Miner, who hired him to become a writer for the TV show 30 Rock.
He made occasional appearances in the show while building up his sketch show material with comedy group Derrick Comedy, who were becoming major hits on YouTube at the time.

After his sketch material became a success at the Sundance Film Festival, the writer, musician and actor was offered a part in the NBC sitcom Community. And this is when Donald Glover’s status absolutely soared.
Hitting the Big Time
The star played the role of Troy Barnes for four seasons before taking a step back to refocus on music. And while we were sad to see him leave the show, we’re really glad he started songwriting again!
Donald Glover adopted the stage name Childish Gambino for his musical alter ego, and started releasing a series of mix tapes.
After drumming up a LOT of hype, his first studio album dropped in 2011. He’s since produced another 3 albums, as well as some super famous singles like This Is America and Feels Like Summer.

But there’s one person who didn’t get to see his TV success- and that was Donald Glover Sr.
During the final show on his This Is America tour, Childish Gambino announced that his father had sadly passed away.
The star said:
“I lost my father a couple weeks ago and I wanted to play him some of the new songs but he didn’t want to hear them, because he was like, ‘I know they’re going to be great.”
Donald later named his son after his late father.
