Connor Bird: Who Is The NBA Legend’s Son?

Larry Bird is a certified legend in the NBA. For 13 seasons, he was the star of the Boston Celtics, and his skills on the court helped them to three NBA titles.

While the focus has been on Larry Bird’s career for a long time, something happened quite recently to turn the attention to his private life.

Larry Bird married Dinah Mattingly in 1989, just as he was approaching the end of his career at the Celtics. The couple has two children together, which includes Connor Bird.

But what happened with Connor Bird, and why was he in the news? Well, the truth isn’t pretty…

Who is Connor Bird?

Connor Bird is actually the adopted son of Larry Bird and Dinah Mattingly. We don’t know much about his biological parentage, but we do know that Connor Bird was born in 1992, making him 30 years old today.

According to rumours, Larry Bird and his son had a good relationship. Larry convinced Connor Bird to pick up basketball in high school and even attended his dad’s alma mater, Indiana State University (though really, Larry was only there for a short time as he dropped out after less than a month).

The troubles with Connor Bird started around 2011 when he was arrested for underage drinking (he was just 19 at the time).

However, just three years later, his out-of-control behaviour got worse. In 2014, the 22-year-old was charged with battery, criminal recklessness and marijuana possession based on one night the previous year.

While Connor Bird could have faced up to a year in prison and a $5,000 fine for the offences, as part of a plea deal he had the battery and drug possession charges dropped.

But what actually happened that night?

A Wild Night

In February 2013, Connor Bird was at home in Bloomington, Indiana with his ex-girlfriend when a fight started. Connor threw a cell phone at his girlfriend and she presumably left.

Later on, Connor Bird went to his exes apartment to reconcile with her. He drove them both to a parking lot nearby to talk things over.

However, this is when things went from bad to worse.

Connor Bird and his ex-girlfriend got into another fight in the car, and she got out with the intention of walking back to her apartment. However, Connor was furious at this and remained in the car.

Then, shockingly, he tried to run her over with his car, twice. A witness on the campus saw what happened and thankfully came to his ex’s aid, taking her to the Indiana University Police Department to press charges.

A year later, Connor Bird was sentenced, but thanks to a plea deal he didn’t have to go to prison. His sentence was deferred for a year if Connor followed a few requirements.

These included not using ‘mood-altering substances’ like alcohol, committing no further criminal offences,  not possessing firearms, and participating in a mentoring program and counselling.

Larry Bird’s Other Children

We don’t know what happened to Connor Bird after his close call with jail. We expect that he’s keeping out of the spotlight now, especially because of his dad’s fame.

But Larry Bird also has other children, and there are complicated relationships there too.

Before he married Dinah Mattingly, Larry Bird has a short-lived marriage to Janet Condra. Larry and Janet knew each other since high school, and their friendship slowly developed into a romantic relationship.

Larry and Janet eventually married in 1975, when Larry’s college basketball career was just starting.

However, their relationship didn’t last long. Janet and Larry separated in 1976, before getting back together briefly a year later when their first daughter Corrie Bird was born.

They divorced after Corrie’s birth, and it seems that Larry Bird and his daughter don’t have a great relationship.

Larry Bird also has one other adopted daughter with Dinah Mattingly – Mariah Bird, Connor Bird’s sister. Like her other siblings, Mariah Bird has chosen to stay out of the spotlight.

However, we do know that she has followed in her father’s footsteps and chosen a career in the NBA. She works for Pacers Sports and Entertainment, the events company for the Indiana Pacers NBA team.
