It’s safe to say that Amara Dean has some seriously famous family members. Not only is her grandmother Whoopi Goldberg, but her mum is also Alex Martin!
So what do we know about the famous family?
Let’s get the lowdown…
Amarah Dean
Whoopi’s fans have been keen to find out more about the star’s family life, so it’s no great surprise that Amarah Dean’s status has started to soar.
She was born to parents Alex Martin, who has starred in the likes of School of Rock and Pitch Perfect, and producer Gary Bernard Dean. Amarah also has two siblings; daughter Jerzey and son Mason.
Amarah is now 32 years old, and likes to live her life away from the cameras. Instead of getting stuck into acting like her mum and grandma, she prefers to focus her time on her daughter and husband.

While there’s a couple of photos online of Amarah Dean and her family, she’s notoriously private, so there’s not that much information out there about who her husband is. She doesn’t have any social media channels, and she doesn’t really appear on her grandma’s Instagram page these days.
Alex Martin
While Amarah might not be so keen on fame, mum Alex Martin is much more comfortable with it.
Alex started her acting career back in 1993 when she was cast as “Classroom Kid” in the American musical comedy film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.
She quickly started scoring parts in other films; the actress starred as Mannerjay in the film Quest of the Delta Knight, as well as Hugh in the 1999 satirical comedy American Intellectuals.
From here, Alex’s career began to soar. Amarah Dean’s mum starred in the American made-for-television Christmas comedy film Call Me Claus in 2001, and went on to play Maria in the movie Strange as Angels in 2003.
She also turned her hand to producing in 2008 with the film The Descendants. It seemed like this was a worthy move for the star, who also went on to produce the short film Sensitive Men in 2018.

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Alex- and she opened up about how tough it was growing up in poverty with her mum Whoopi.
The Color Purple star’s daughter once recalled what it was like being on “food stamps” throughout her childhood.
“I know what it’s like because my mom has her [welfare] cards framed.
Seriously … I remember that. I remember we had the one-room space and we slept in the bed together. I remember when we wanted to travel we would drive across the country in broken down bugs.”
Famous Grandma
It wasn’t until Whoopi started a career in acting that their fortunes began to change.
After years of hard work, Whoopi Goldberg’s career took off in the mid-1980s, and she scored her first big break in The Color Purple in 1985. This catapulted her into stardom, and she soon had her pick of cushy Hollywood roles.

The actress went on to star in 1987’s Fatal Beauty, 1990’s Ghost, as well as Sister Act. She even landed her own show during the early 1990s!
Despite her fame and superstardom, Whoopi and Alex have remained as close as ever over the years. “We talk multiple times a day,” the proud mom gushed about Alex during a 2015 appearance on The Wendy Williams Show.
And on The View in 2016, the Academy Award winner even called Alex her “best friend.”
When Alex gave birth to Amarah, it seems like the family are just as close as ever.
Whoopi said:
“She’s one of the most trustworthy and loyal people. She’s somebody who makes me laugh… and we can talk to each other at any time of the day or night.”
