Peter Kay is one of the nation’s most-loved comedians. Since the late 1990s, he’s appeared on our screens in hilarious shows like That Peter Kay Thing and Max and Paddy’s Road To Nowhere with Paddy McGuinness.

He’s also performed several successful standup tours and appeared on chat shows during his almost 25-year career.

However, though Peter Kay is one of the most recognisable British comedians, little is known about his personal life. He’s a very private person, and some fans don’t even know that he has a wife.

So who is his wife, Susan Gargan?

Who is Susan Gargan?

While Peter Kay has chosen to keep his personal life out of the spotlight, we do know a little about his wife, Susan Gargan.

Peter met Susan Gargan at a nightclub in Bolton in 1998. This was one year after Peter won Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny? comedian talent contest, and the same year he was winning awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

However, at the time, Peter wasn’t doing comedy as a full-time job. He was working at the local cinema in Bolton, and Susan had a job at Boots.

According to Peter, Susan Gargan was so taken with the comedian that she agreed to go on a date with him the next night. They dated for three years and eventually married in 2001.

Later in 2001, the couple welcomed their first child, Charlie Michael Kay. Their son’s name is a tribute to Peter Kay’s and Susan Gargan’s dads.

After the birth of his first son, Peter said: “Fatherhood has changed me – it has to change you. It makes you much more aware of the minutiae of life, it’s not about your needs anymore, it’s about everyone else’s.”

Peter and Susan Gargan have since had two more children, but Peter has kept them out of the limelight as much as possible, and little is known about them.

Explaining this, Peter has said: “I’m actually shy and my salvation is coming home and being normal. My children are still young and I want to be at home with them.”

Peter Kay’s Career

Though in recent years Peter Kay has been away from the comedy stage, fans still remember the hilarious shows he’s created.

His earliest work was That Peter Kay Thing and Phoenix Nights for Channel 4. In 2005, he recorded a cover of Tony Christie’s ‘(Is This The Way to) Amarillo’ for Comic Relief, which ended up being the year’s best-selling single.

He has also released several DVDs of his popular standup shows. His show Live at the Bolton Albert Halls holds the record as the fastest-selling British stand-up DVD.

In 2015, he recorded a new sitcom, Peter Kay’s Car Share, for the BBC. Two years later, he appeared at the fundraiser for the Manchester Arena terror attacks.

Comeback Tour

In 2017, fans were ecstatic after Peter Kay announced his first stand-up shows in eight years. The tour, Peter Kay Live: Have Gags, Will Travel, should have taken in dates across the country, but was unexpectedly cancelled.

In a statement released on Twitter, Peter Kay said: “Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects.

I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media. I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again, I’m very sorry.”
