TV presenter Melanie Sykes and toy boy Jack Cockings’ whirlwind romance was something that a LOT of twitter users couldn’t ignore.
Romance blossomed between the pair back in 2012 when they began to exchange cheeky messages over the social media platform, which resulted in their shock marriage.
And the controversy kept on coming. Just seven months after tying the knot, the couple ended up splitting- with an arrest and broken hand thrown in for good measure.
So what actually went down between the pair?

New Romantics
Three years after divorcing her actor husband Daniel Caltagirone in 2009, Melanie and Jack started exchanging tweets. Lots of them.
Jack bombarded the TV presenter with flirty comments- something that the roofer had done previously with starlets Jodie Marsh and Cheryl Cole.
He asked Jodie: “Do you need a boyfriend?” and also told Cheryl “Love you x” – before asking the singer to meet him for a drink.
Jack pulled a similar trick with Mel, who promptly fell for his charms.
The roofer turned to Mel, saying: “No way are you 41!” and asked “Marry me?”.
From this point, the pair began to exchange increasingly raunchy messages on Twitter for everyone to see.
Melanie tweeted that she had “the giddiest knickers of my life” and told Jack she had “the raging horn”. Clearly Jack’s techniques were paying off…

But it seems that Jack Cockings wasn’t just targeting celebrity beauties. The Sun revealed that the 28-year-old was pulling similar tricks with other girls online- including heartbroken chef Heidi Caswell.
On the 20th May 2012, Jack asked Mel out on a date in a public Twitter message…the same
morning he was at Heidi’s house having spent the night.
Heidi spoke of her pain when she found out that Jack had sent Mel identical Twitter messages to those she’d received from the roofer:
“I thought we had something special but it was all a lie. All the while he was flirting with Mel.
“Jack’s got a filthy sense of humour which I fell for and so did she. He was playing both of us at the same time, sending identical messages and even the same photos.”
Jack responded to Heidi’s comments, and said:
“Every heterosexual guy has got his needs. I wasn’t in a relationship with Heidi. All I did was have sex with her.”
Married Life
Despite Jack Cocking’s reputation, the mother of two pushed on with her romance with her toy boy. The pair quickly fell into a relationship, but things didn’t just stop there.
Melanie and Jack, who shared a 16-year age gap, got engaged in August 2012 after just three months of dating.

The couple went on to tie the knot in a swanky ceremony in Dorset, with celebrity guests including Eamonn Holmes and Des O’Connor.
But it wasn’t long before reports of their troubled marriage began to emerge, and Mel was quick to hit back at rumours.
The presenter took to twitter yet again, this time to set the record straight:
“A huge thank you to all my supporters who are smart enough to not believe everything they read in the papers. I love you guys”.

However, it soon became clear that things were beginning to sour between Mel and her hubby.
The TV presenter split from Jack after seven months of marriage- a month after she was arrested and cautioned for assaulting the 28-year-old at their home in North London.

Jack Cockings had shared a post about an alleged black eye and broken hand in a tweet two days before Mel’s arrest, which clearly hinted at domestic violence.
He posted a picture which said:
“If I have 10 pieces of bacon and you take 5 what do you have? That’s right, a black eye and a broken hand.”
After their divorce, Jack went on to revealed that he would ‘rather be alone’ than continue to be married to Mel, and said that the star has lashed out at him on several occasions during their time together.
Melanie Sykes stayed silent on her marriage and divorce to Jack for a long time, but finally opened up to The Sun’s Fabulous magazine in 2016.
The star divulged:
The divorce was the easy bit. (The hard bit was) being married to the wrong person.
It’s always difficult to break up with somebody, but it’s been for the best and I knew it at the time and that’s why we’re not together.’
Mel became more used to discussing her relationship with Jack over time, and later revealed that despite her struggles, she wasn’t worried about getting into another relationship.
In an interview with OK! Magazine, the presenter said:
“It’s been forced upon me, but it’s just an evolution, life goes on. Obviously it hasn’t been easy – it’s a big deal – but I make my life happen and my friends and family help me.
I love being in love. It’s a great feeling. But I’m not going to define myself by a bloke. No way.”
Melanie Sykes is now dating hunky Venetian gondolier Riccardo Simionato.
