We’ve all binge watched Bridgerton. It’s the most popular series at the moment and it’s not hard to see why. Being swept up in the glitz and glam of 19th century balls and dances is the perfect bit of escapism right now. Everybody is completely invested in the romance and the characters of Daphne and Simon – and they’re pretty easy on the eye. It’s left most of us wanting to know about who they are off set.
So here are 40 facts that you didn’t know about Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor. There’s definitely more to her than meets the eye…
40. She finds modern dating hard
Despite being a famous actress, she finds the modern dating scene hard (along with the rest of us). Having been acting a role in the 19th century she feels it was actually much easier back then to start a relationship with someone. Today, she feels that there is no social etiquette and so you never truly know where you stand with a guy. It’s a kind of guessing game, sometimes it will lead to something more serious, and on other occasions it will fizzle into nothing.

Back then, she says that men were much more romantic and they would turn up at your house with flowers to declare their interest or perform a grand gesture of some kind. There’s not much of that about today. She, like a lot of people trying to date in the 21st century find that people are less romantic and there is much more focus on dating apps and social media. One thing she does acknowledge however is that if there is someone, she is really not interested in she can just tell them straight up. But, back then there was more pressure to appear to consider it (Nigel Berbrooker). Now, you have the power to simply say – no.

This one’s pretty disappointing to all the Bridgerton fans out there who were hoping that the romance blossom on Tv and in real life too. Unfortunately, the on-screen romance ends on screen. When you watch Bridgerton it’s easy to imagine these two together in real life because of the crazy chemistry and connection between them that we witness on TV.

It’s no wonder people started thinking that this was more than a TV romance. But that is their job as actors, so I guess its kudos to their acting skills that they’ve managed to convince us so well. They both shut down any rumours and she’s revealed that this relationship is purely on screen. She says that the sparks we see between them are all down to the beautiful scripting. So, despite the rumours that have been going around – they are not true, Phoebe and Regé-Jean are not together. But we can dream. This couple look so great together.
38. Phoebe has two siblings
She is the eldest of three siblings, she has a younger brother and sister – Samuel Dynevor and Harriet Dynevor. She is very close with her parents and siblings and they enjoy spending time with one another on a regular basis. Harriet has just started high school, whereas Samuel is just two years younger than Phoebe. Sally has become a household name who everyone knows and loves – despite her very particular ways.

She’s been nominated for Best TV soap Personality at the 2011 Television and Radio Industries Club Awards. 36. She absolutely loves books
Fans haven’t been blessed with a full home tour yet, but one thing we can’t help but notice from the pictures she uploads on Instagram is – she LOVES books. Being in the capital means she is now more central to opportunities that will most certainly arise now she has become a huge success and a name that everybody will recognise. Not only has she moved to a new place, but it is also the first time she has lived alone. She played the well-known teenager Siobhan; her character was particularly known for causing mischief alongside her former co-star Jenna Coleman. 33. She had an almost naked encounter with fans
This sounds very awkward indeed. She had a VERY awkward encounter with fans one day when she was unaware that there was a tour going on. Whilst filming, she was staying in a beautiful place and It was the middle of summer so the weather was hot. Whilst she was strolling round the place, she had forgotten that the place she was staying was open to tours at the weekends.

When she wears her wig down, she describes herself as looking like the girl from the horror movie The Ring, particularly she thinks because of her pale complexion. She describes how the schools she went to made her very aware that she wasn’t the brightest. When she went to college to do her A-levels she really had to work her hardest to get the grades she wanted. In the end, she achieved an A and two B’s – that sounds pretty clever to us. She was extremely proud of this achievement. But, after college she didn’t want to pursue academia any further – her acting career had already begun and she was keen to continue following down this route. And look where it’s got her now.
29. She’s bonded with Regé
So, whilst we now know there is nothing romantic going on off screen between these two, that is not to say the bond between them wasn’t real. To be able to realistically portray the passion and desire for each other on screen they had to really establish their chemistry off screen. And to do this, they did it is a very fun albeit unusual way: dance rehearsals. Of course, for Bridgerton, some dance routines did have to be learnt.

But these dance sessions were more than just about learning a routine. They were about really getting to know one another in a more intimate way, learning to be comfortable with each other and to trust one another. Because, as Page explained, when one of you falls during the dance the other literally has to catch you. What better bonding exercise is there? On their free days they would call each other up and ask if they wanted to practice some more. After this, the pair had a real bond and connection with each other.
28. She learned to ride side saddle
In those days, the majority of women who rode horses would ride side saddle (or at least they were expected to). So, for Bridgerton this was no different. She found this a very interesting experience but she certainly won’t be making the change that’s for sure. In fact, there was a scene in Bridgeton when she insisted that she would not ride side saddle. This, wasn’t down to her personally preference or choice.

It was due to the fact that Phoebe who knew and understood her character felt that in this urgent scene, her character would not have ridden side saddle, she’d have let go of gender expectations in her desperation to complete her mission and save her brother and future husband from their duel. Sitting side saddle, she felt was too casual for this scene and she thought that it would not have suited either Daphne or the situation. So, the script writer let her make this alteration as she pushed for it.
27. She has an attachment to Julie Andrews.
We all love Julie Andrews, for many reasons. Not only is she an amazing actress, but for most people she brings back fond and nostalgic memories. Phoebe is no different, she feels a sentimental attachment to her. But the reason is probably a little more peculiar than most. When her mum was pregnant with her, she was two weeks late. So, she would watch Mary Poppins every day to try and help her come out.

Perhaps she though that Mary Poppins’ magic would somehow speed up the process. So, Julie Andrews voice was one of the few familiar voices Phoebe will have recognised even before she was born. Now, she feels very attached to Julie Andrews so it must have been a dream come true that she was a part of Bridgerton. Julie Andrews was the voice over for Bridgerton’s narrator – Lady Whistledown- the infamous town gossip/reporter.
26. She thinks the importance of image is similar now to then
Despite being set in 1813, Daphne draws comparisons to women then and women now and the kinds of expectations that are on women. She describes how in the 19th century, for wealthy women their world would be governed by how many suitors they have, how many names the had on their dance card and what kind of material they wore to a ball.

She felt that this seemed strangely modern to her, because such strong expectations of what a woman should look like still apply. She describes how back then appearance was everything and with the scrutiny that the women faced a bad hair day was out of the question. Any foot wrong, and future prospects could be out the window. But she feels the same pressure today, to look a certain way.
25 She thinks social media tells you who to be
For her, social media was less prominent growing up than it is now. A few years ago, it was still a huge thing but it was nothing compared to what it is today. Of course, now she is exposed to it in full force as it has become a more and more pervading influence. But she feels lucky that she escaped a childhood which was governed by social media. Her sister is 9 years younger and Phoebe describes how she has experienced growing up when social media is everywhere.

At a young age, social media can have a greater impact on thoughts and feelings as we are more influenced by things. She describes how her sister has grown up being told how to be, how to act and especially how to look. She feels that image is increasingly scrutinised and that social media focuses excessively on the image of women. Just like for Phoebe in Bridgerton who is exposed to the male gaze and constantly glorified upon her appearance alone and not for her character.
24. She had a panic attack whilst shooting
Filming for a series or movie is such an intense time with hectic schedules, disturbed sleep patterns and long gruelling hours. So, at the end of a 7 month – shoot it was really taking its toll and she was feeling the effects. But in actual fact she says that there was one day in particularly when it all got on top of her, she was having one of those days where you do not feel like you look your best. But she couldn’t hide she had to film. And, it was the scene where she stands at the top of the stairs and everybody turns to look at her. This pressure completely got to her as she was already feeling rubbish and she ended up having a panic attack. Not that we’d ever have suspected a thing watching her on TV as she looks perfectly held together as always.
23. She found one scene very hard to film
If you’ve watched Bridgerton – you’ll definitely have noticed why it has a reputation for its steamy sex scenes – you couldn’t possibly not. This isn’t the first time Phoebe has had to act scenes of this nature, she has performed sex scenes before in other series and so this wasn’t the part she struggled with the most. In fact, she said they had someone on set to make sure they were both comfortable during intimate scenes and so she and Page found the whole thing really fun instead of awkward.

But there is one scene she found really difficult to film, when she is intimately exploring her own body. There was no one else in the scene with her to be able to have fun with and so she felt huge pressure on herself and felt pretty uncomfortable while it was being filmed. With these shots there is no rehearsal due to the nature of it. She found this helped a little bit because it meant she only had to film it once.
22. She find the idea of fame scary
Of course, Phoebe is no stranger to fame, she has grown up with an actress for a mother and she herself has starred in Waterloo from a young age. But, this kind of small-scale fame is a very different kettle of fish than what she will experience now due to the success of Bridgerton. So, whilst she is blown away and elated at the success she has had, she releases it will be a huge change, and that with the highs inevitably come some lows. Being known by everyone means that everybody wants to know who you are, what you’re doing – and that has its huge pressures. She’s more than happy with this, she loves Daphne and loves the fact she will be known for her role on Bridgerton. She’s really proud of what Bridgerton stand for. Phoebe revealed how hard it was for them and that her mum is everything to her, the thought of losing her was unbearable. She says that the family deep down had faith she would be okay and they stayed string for Sally. Thankfully Sally got the all clear, and made a full recovery and they are all looking forward to the future. But it made the family realise that life was short and fragile and it should not be taken for granted. She says that for a teenager, it was a lot to deal with and it has affected her a lot.
19. Her most asked question is about Regé-Jean Page
There’s a lot we want to ask Phoebe, the new star of Bridgerton. But apparently not as much as we want to ask about Regé-Jean Page. It turns out that her most frequently asked question isn’t about herself, her acting, or even the show – it’s about Regé-Jean Page. Page has absolutely captured the hearts of the nation, so much so that people are questioning Phoebe about him. I mean who can blame them, he is pretty dreamy.

But, that’s not the most bizarre thing. The question it seems that everybody wants Phoebe to answer, is what the 31-year-old star smells like. It seems that he has captured everybody’s imaginations, and now they even want to know his aroma. Phoebe’s been really stunned by just how many people have asked this question, but she’s gone ahead and answered it anyway. Apparently, he smells really, really nice, and he never smells bad. I’m sure that’s exactly what everyone wanted to know.
18. She can’t imagine how filming can happen in a pandemic
So, this isn’t the news we want to hear. But we’ve heard it from Netflix that a season 2 is definitely happening, I guess the question left is when. Phoebe herself doesn’t seem to know and she does not think it’s likely during the height of the pandemic. Of course, dure to restriction that many people on set would not be possible and there would have to be extreme safety measures in place to get the go ahead.

That’s not to say it’s impossible as we have seen many series resume filming during the pandemic by applying all of the right measures in place. Then again, social distancing in Bridgerton may not have the same effect. I guess we’ll have to stay tuned for the exact return dates. Let’s hope it’s soon. What we can reveal is that the new episodes will focus much more on Daphne’s older and very single brother, Anthony/Viscount Bridgerton, who is played by Jonathan Baile.
17. There were intimacy coordinators on set
The steamy scenes we see on our TV screens weren’t as natural as they looked. There were intimacy coordinators on set to help set out every single thing. Her and Regé-Jean had to go through every single scene before they’d shoot it, so none of it was spontaneous acting, every inch of detail within the scene had been planned out. She knew exactly where Regé would put his hand at what time vice versa. It meant that the couple could relax without wondering what the other person was going to do next and having to react to that on screen.

She actually compared it to rehearsing a fight scene – because every move was structured and rehearsed in the same way. And, there were actually props and matts in between them so that the pair weren’t actually touching. The pair much preferred having the intimacy coordinators on set and found it a very enjoyable experience – with no awkwardness. She compared it to ones she had done in the past and said it was nothing like filming those, there were no intimacy coordinators or anything. She added that they probably wouldn’t even be allowed anymore.
16. She has had one serious relationship
Back in 2014 Phoebe was in a serious relationship with Simon Merill who is a recruitment executive. They went travelling together (the test of any relationship) and went to Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. She spoke about how amazing the trip was and that Simon was half Thai. So, for him, it was even more special as it was also a personal journey.

They went to visit his family’s village where his grandma, aunt and uncle still live. The pair eventually split and the reason is unknown. Perhaps the pair simply drifted apart as they grew up. But Phoebe has definitely been more guarded about her love life since this relationship and she now keeps everything as private as possible. For example, she was linked to Sean Teale and then the pair later split. But, with this relationship she shared no public details.
15. She defends the casting
There has been much backlash because of the racial diversity shows in Bridgerton. The show represents a time where racial diversity was not accepted and there were very racist views. So, some people have criticised the casting of Bridgerton because it shows ignorance to the reality of the racial situation. But Phoebe has defended the show’s choice saying that the people cast were perfect for their roles, despite race.

She says that the actors were hired based on their skill rather than their race, despite the fact that the topic was discussed on set. And, she further pointed out that some of the show’s Black and multiracial characters reflect real historical figures. For example, Will Mondrich, the professional boxer played by Martins Imhangbe, is a character loosely based on Bill Richmond, who escaped slavery by building a successful boxing career. Plus, many historians believe that Queen Charlotte (played by Golda Rosheuvel) was actually a multiracial member of the royal family. Phoebe is proud of the fact Bridgerton is portraying this when no other series has.
14. She’s proud of the show’s racial diversity
Phoebe isn’t the only member of the show to defend its multiracial casting. The Queen in the show, is a proud black woman who honours her heritage by wearing traditional hairstyles from her culture. The show mentions in the middle of the series that she becoming a queen as a black woman, raised the status of many individuals and encouraged racial diversity.

Rosheuvel felt that it was empowering to be able to portray a fictional past in which races were accepted and a new hierarchy could take place. She felt empowered by stepping into the shoes of someone who could fight for her people and she felt that as a show it allowed you to explore new boundaries and possibilities and offer another perspective of possibility. She believes that this show is a step in the right direction, despite some critics not being satisfied with how the subject of race was handled or portrayed. Phoebe agrees with this and remains really proud of everything that the show stands for.
13. She and Page keep in regular contact
At least if they aren’t romantically involved, we want them to be good friends. And, they are. Because of the amount of time together, the pair became really close. It wasn’t only the filming time that they spent together, they’d often be staying at the same place and even eating breakfast with each other in the morning which she said was really funny. They also spend their days off together getting to know one another.
