Superstore, is a comedy which revolves around the personal lives and professional lives of the people working at cloud 9. If you like the rest of us, have been binge-watching Superstore for the last 6 seasons, then you’ll be eager to know these behind the scenes facts.

40. Carol almost sabotaged Sandra’s wedding
The writers had a few more twists up their sleeves when It came to the storylines and characters. They had thought about having a scene where Carol (Irene White), would sabotage Sandra’s wedding, and not only that but she would gate-crash the wedding whilst singing along to Satisfied from Hamilton the musical. This sounds like a pretty epic plot twist.

Unfortunately, the producers didn’t end up going with it. But it was a good idea anyhow. Another idea they had but never ended up carrying out was that Sandra would be so stressed about her wedding, that she would start to go bald overt the course of the season. It sounds like Sandra escaped lightly, and thankfully she had her big day in peace.
39. Superstore was almost called something very different
Now we know it so well, it’s hard to imagine that Superstore would ever be called anything else but that. Especially, The Greatest Love Story Ever Told. But this was the name that everyone was set on, producers came up with it and they had even had it agreed with NBC. So, it was all set. Or not quite because NBC then decided later on that they wanted a new name.

There had been a lot of romantic comedy series that had failed that year and so they did not want it to be associated with them. People clearly weren’t into rom-coms at that moment in time and so they did not want the name to stop people from watching it. Superstore is a much more general name and it doesn’t have connotations of a certain genre. Plus, the show is about many kinds of relationships and drama so we think this name is a really good fit. Short but sweet.
38. Cloud 9 was almost called cloud 8
The title of the show wasn’t the only thing to almost have a different name. The creator, Justin Spitzer, had originally meant for Cloud 8 to be called Cloud 9. Of course, cloud 9 is a reference to heaven. So, Cloud 8 was playing on the fact that this store fell a bit short from those great expectations and was actually in no way exceptional.

He thought it would be a funny way to symbolise how average the store is. But when it came to choosing the final once he settled on Cloud 9. He opted for this in the end because he felt it was a realistic company name that a legitimate company would opt for. SO, he ended up opting for the more obvious of the two. But it works all the same.
37. The racoon scene was based on real events
The scenes in the show when racoons take over cloud 9 wasn’t a storyline that had been totally made up. It was actually inspired by their set where a bunch of racoons actually live. The cast often find themselves being watched by the racoons as they are filming a scene.

So, they took this remarkable occurrence and turned it into one of the shows episodes. The showrunners have become quite used to the racoons now and they are just another familiar feature. Of course, in Superstore the racoons are a lot more disruptive than the real ones they have on set – thankfully. In reality, they are now just furry fans of the show.
36. Filming was stopped
The pandemic has upended everything for the past year and brought much of the world to a halt, and filming for a TV show is no exception. Filming stopped briefly all over the world for a period of time and recently, slowly but surely it has resumed – in a totally new way. It can now continue in some cases, with heavy safety restrictions and rules to follow to make sure that it is safe to do so.

So, because of the coronavirus America Ferrera’s final scenes almost happened an episode early. The writers reworked the script so that if filming ended sooner that they had planned, they would still have the content available so that they could still make a good ending to the season. It meant that despite the ending not looking like they had originally planned, at least they could manage it if filming became impossible. This is very forward thinking – but thankfully, it wasn’t necessary in the end.
35. Jerry’s proposal was all improvised
As we know, some of the best moments in this show are completely improvised. It’s credit to the actors involved when not only can they act well but they are such natural performers that they can improvise the best scenes. One of the biggest moments of series 3 was Jerry’s proposal to Sandra. The much-anticipated proposal. And it turns out it was all improvised.

They had originally written a proposal in season 3 but they ended up cutting it out, so they scrapped the script for that scene and had a go at filming it without. The new improvised proposal was far better an everyone was happy with it. It didn’t take long to get it perfect and it was a much better way to capture the moment. The scene was so good and we can’t imagine it any other way.
34. The show tries not to be political
Politics. The age-old debate and of the most controversial topics that there possibly is. It’s the kind of conversation you avoid if you are trying to keep things light hearted or if you are trying not to potentially insult someone. Which, is exactly where the show stands in its view of politics. While it covers topical events and issues because it is centred around characters experiencing life, they try to steer away from being too political.

It is something that has been discussed many times during the creation of the show – trying to find a good balance. If they ever took a stand and declared a preference to a certain political view point – It would be at the risk of alienating the rest of the population who didn’t share this same view. So, although they show the different opinions of different characters, the show tries to avoid getting too political so that it doesn’t offend people, and so that it remains accessible to everybody.
33. There was a toilet roll shortage on set
Who remembers the toilet roll shortage? Pretty much everyone (all too clearly). During the beginning of the pandemic toilet roll became like gold dust. Shops were completely out of stock and people were struggling to get hold of any at all. It was a very strange time and people started completely panicking and hoarding items which meant that they became pretty much non-existent and extremely hard to get hold of.

Nico had tried to find some toilet roll on set so that he could take some home with him, because he like the rest of us was running out and couldn’t get any more. But when he got there it had all already been taken by the other cast and crew members. Thankfully, he looked in his trailer and found four rolls so he took them home. Nobody wants to be without toilet roll.
32. The show avoids sounding preachy
So, as we know the show finds it important to highlight different problems and people’s moral stances in regards to different topics. But, one thing the show never wants to do is to sound too preachy. Spitzer, the show’s creator wants to find a balance between highlighting topical issues but not coming across like they are taking the moral high ground or trying to teach people a lesson.

In fact, despite discussing these issues, the show’s purpose is to find different perspectives on them and not to try and make a statement. His co-workers share his opinion on this and they have said how they would never want the show to feel too academic or too much as though it is trying to educate– at the end of the day the show provides comedy and entertainment and it has to keep this at its core.
31. Amy’s name tag is a running joke
So, as we know, Amy never manages to get a name tag with her own name on it. She always ends up wearing a random name tag because she has not yet been given her own. But this now has become a running joke and something that all the cast and crew have fun with. It has become a kind of honour for the person who gets to decide the name tag on Amy’s badge and the crew love having fun with it.

Now, the writer of each episode gets to name Amy’s name tag for that episode. America even revealed that every now and then they’ll have a couple of glasses of wine and they will end up promising fans in the audience that they will use their name for the next episode. This isn’t just an empty promise and it has happened. One fan had their name used, and it was Dwendyna.
30. The show thinks the truth is strange and funny enough
Another reason the show is a favourite amongst so many people is because its humour is based in real life. So, unlike some shows that make comedy out of the farfetched, Superstore focuses its comedy value in the truth. The creators of the show acknowledge that the truth is often the strangest thing of all, so within real life you can find the most bizarre, comical, and often unbelievable moments.

Often you witness things in real life that you think are too strange to be real. This, is what Spitzer thinks is their niche, their sweet spot of comedy. Plus, you can never run out of storylines because things happen every day in real life. Things are always changing and more comical and strange things will happen each and every day that they can draw inspiration from. This is what makes the show so funny and genuine.
29. It focuses on the working class
The show focuses on the every-day life of working-class people in America. By focusing on the daily lives of ordinary people it shows the reality of normal life with all of its highs and its lows. Rather than glamorize an extraordinary luxury lifestyle or super rich population, the show believes that it demonstrates how normal issues will affect people wherever they live, whatever they earn, no matter who they are.

The working class make up the majority of the population. It wants to recognise this rather than portray a false perception of reality.After all, that’s why the show revolves around working in a store. Plus, this is what the show is all about – finding the comedy which lies in the truth and the ordinary every-day life.
28. It portrays the unglamourous realities of a store
It would be unrealistic if Superstore didn’t show the unglamourous side of working in a store. It’s not all gossip, love life and personal drama. When Superstore shows the employees trying to desperately maintain order within the store whilst shoppers burst through the door trying to grab everything they need for their holidays – it’s not really an exaggeration.

They really do face these kinds of problems that we can see in Superstore where customers will break the rules, leave the store in mayhem and sometimes even fight to get the last of a product. Working in a store can be tiring and hard work. And of course, it’s not only the customers who can cause chaos in the store. Some store employees hide the best bargains either for themselves or for family and friends and so they hide them. This is the kind of realistic store trouble that the show comically portrays really well, and it’s not even made up – it’s based on people’s actual experiences.
27. Glenn often improvises
Glenn has to be one of the best and most loveable characters. And what’s impressive is that most of his best loved and most iconic moments are actually improvised. Mark McKinney is a natural talent and most of his notable moments come to him in the moment. He often finds that he goes off script or adds bits as he feels necessary or basically just because he feels like it.

And its these moments and snippets that have created some of the best scenes, and they are part of the reason his character is so great. Particularly, if you see Glenn singing in an episode – you can be fairly certain that this was all improvised and that it wasn’t actually written into the script at any point. He can’t help his musical flair from escaping him during filming and it adds to his comical and eccentric nature. And we love it.
26. The final of season 5 will be shown in season 6
Like every movie/ series that has been filming recently, Superstore has had its fair share of upheaval. Thankfully, we are still getting the proper finale, it will just later than imagined due to the global pandemic. The final episode, which was supposed to be shown at the end of season 5 will now be shows in the second episode of season 6.

It was due to be filmed back in March, but due to obvious reasons this wasn’t able to happen. Thankfully though we will still get the dramatic ending we were all waiting for. So, America will be returning to our screens to get the deserved ending and finish Amy’s story the way it had always been intended. It’s been long awaited by fans, but at least we know it will definitely be coming now.
25. Dina’s backstory about her dad wasn’t scripted
As we know some of the show’s best moments have been completely impromptu and improvised. Not all of the big storylines and back stories have been carefully scripted. It turns out that Dina’s backstory about her relationship with her dad, all originated from an improvised scene. It was down to Lauren and Nico’s natural flair for acting and their quick thinking that it all came together during filming one day.

Lauren and Nico were acting on set during season 1 when it came about. The pair came up with it totally on the spot, everyone loved it and thought it was a great fit and so it was kept and expanded into an even bigger back story. Once the initial idea had arisen, script writers used it and turned it into something more. Of course, now that Dina’s dad had been mentioned, they needed to find someone to play him to join the show. So, in season 5 Dean Norris was recruited to play the part.
24. It shows the dynamics of mixing work with pleasure
Relationships at work are one of the most controversial things, some people support it and some people think they are to be avoided at all costs. Despite the commonly known saying, don’t mix work with pleasure, it pretty much happens in every single job. When people spend so much time together it’s only natural that some people form an attraction and that it can lead to a blossoming relationship.

Or, a lot of unwanted drama. Of course, it happens in Superstore. Amy and Jonah begin with a love/ hate relationship but this grows and eventually the pair confess their true feelings for one another. They were hesitant particularly because they work together. But, we all saw it coming and we are delighted now that it’s out in the open.
23. The show tries to balance comedy with serious issues
As we know, the show covers loads of different issues. And, although it focuses on serious problems, it still tries to maintain its light-hearted entertainment which is the reason everybody loves the show so much. Finding the balance between covering serious topics and finding humour in them is not an easy thing to do. The more sensitive a topic is, the more contentious people are about it and the more easily insulted people can be if it is dealt with in the wrong way.

So, Spitzer tries to delicately balance the two. He thinks it is very important not to be flippant about things, but he thinks that you can still find humour in them and still create a comical spin on it. This is one of the reasons people love the show, because it is not too far removed from reality – but it still provides humorous escapism. After all, people watch because they want to be entertained, and this is what the show does so well.
22. Santos found season 4’s finale really hard to film
The season 4 finale is all about the issues surrounding somebody who is undocumented. For Nico Santos, this was a particularly personal storyline for him to be involved with. He emigrated from the Philippines when he was just 16 and so he has shared some of the experiences that were included in the episode. He said the final episode of season 4 was one of the hardest he had ever had to film.

He opened up and talked about the fact that anybody who comes to this country as an Immigrant will know somebody who is undocumented. And so, this episode was very hard hitting for him and brought his experiences back to him. America, Lauren and Nichole Bloom were also all in tears during this episode. It brought up some very emotional topics.
21. Lauren and Nico want a musical episode
We all love a musical. And apparently so do the cast of Superstore. Lauren and Nico have revealed that they have been practically begging the writers to let them do a musical episode. It seems Lauren and Nico have some hidden talents up their sleeves and have a guilty pleasure for musical theatre.

A musical version of Superstore, now that would be a real treat for fans. These two have been continually asking since the filming of the Pilot so it looks like there is no signs of the producers budging yet. But perseverance is key so perhaps one f these days they’ll let them have their way (hopefully). Who’d be up for a musical episode? We think it would be pretty fun.
20. There were many plot twists that didn’t make the cut
When we see a TV show or a movie – what we don’t see is all the possible twists and plots that were almost very nearly included. The scripts are pretty much an outline of what will be filmed but there are always different options. There are so many more ideas that go into the production and only a few actually materialise. So, here is one of the plot twists that almost happened in Season 1.

Jonah, was (very nearly) supposed to be a spy from Cloud 9 corporate who had taken the sales associate job so that he could find out about and report on union activity. This was one of the many possible endings for season 1 – it certainly would have been a big finale. This sounds like a pretty exciting plot twist. Can we imagine Jonah as a spy? Who knows whether all the plot twists we don’t know about will ever come into fruition. The producers must have lots of exciting things up their sleeves.
19. The show makes an effort to be current and real
The producer Gabe Miller highlights how he focuses on real world problems so that the show is current and realistic. When an issue arises, he feels it is important to show it from a variety of perspectives, to represent all sides so that is not biased to one group of people. Also, because they put a comical spin on things they often try and explore the most humorous avenues by looking at the funniest experiences.

And to create the comedy value, he says they will often have multiple people being equally ridiculous from a multitude of angles. This way, the show achieves humour, but they are also ensuring an equal approach and are not ignoring real issues that arise in people’s lives. People enjoy a show that they can relate to without feeling that it is out of touch with reality.
18. They tried to find a way around filming crowds
For the season 5 finale the producers had it all planned out. It was supposed to be dramatic and include huge crowd scenes. After all, it’s a final episode so of course it has to end big. Due to the pandemic, producers were trying to figure out how they could make it safe enough to continue with their plans.

They were trying to come up with suggestions and ideas of how to get a crowd of people together for filming, whilst still ensuring everyone’s safety. Lauren Ash (who plays character Dina) jokingly suggested that they would have to get as many mannequins as possible and put them in the background. But it turns out these plans were all cancelled anyway. Filming was halted and so all filming was off for the foreseeable.
17. They try to raise awareness
In Season two the episode Guns, Pills, and Birds focuses on a variety of controversial things such as buying guns and the morning after pill. The show creator Spitzer, was trying to demonstrate what can happen when an employer asks an employee to do something that doesn’t sit right with their moral code. So, Jonah tries to avoid a shift where he is meant to be selling guns at the cloud 9 gun counter because he does not agree with the sale of guns.

Then, Glenn tries to buy up the whole stock of morning after pills so that they won’t be available for people to buy over the shelf. But, when he realises how expensive this will be, he starts to try and sell them back to the customers. This episode took inspiration from topics where people have very different opinions on them. And, the issue of when an employer and employee share different viewpoints on sensitive topics.
16. The cast had all guessed America was pregnant before she told them
America never got to do the big pregnancy announcement to her cast and crew members because they had already all guessed. So, by the time she did – no one was at all surprised. The first thing that made people suspicious is when she randomly declared that she craved pancakes whilst filming on set. This was the first reason that made people started to wonder.

Ben and Colton in particularly had picked up on this and asked her whether she was pregnant. Although she denied it, nobody believed her. Then Lauren Ash jokingly told America’s husband that she had told them all she was pregnant. America, panicked and started denying to her husband that she had told anyone, and this was pretty much the confirmation everybody needed that she in fact really was pregnant. She hadn’t wanted to hide it from her co-stars for long but the cat definitely got out of the bag quicker than she had intended.
15. The show won’t be coming back for a season 7
Okay so this something that NONE of us wanted to hear. It is official – there will be no season 7 (why Netflix!?). NBC announced that the show will conclude this spring after its successful six seasons – 113 episodes. It isn’t exactly known why they have decided that this will be the last season of Superstore but the news followed the departure of America Ferrera.

America was one of the original cast and was also the executive producer. So, it is most likely that with America leaving the show had unfortunately come to a natural end. This is definitely not the news that we wanted to hear but I guess we’ll have to keep an eye out to see where the cast will go next. The cast were just as disappointed with this news and they all feel nothing but love for the show and will leave with heavy hearts.
14. The cast are sad it’s not resuming
The cast were really sad that the show would not be resuming, after all this time filming together the cast felt that they had bonded and were all a big Superstore family. Lauren Ash said that she was incredibly sad despite being so grateful for the opportunities the show had given her. Colton Dunn said that it is, and will always be the most amazing show he has ever worked on and that it has been a privilege to be involved.

In the same manner, Chayenne took to social media to share what an incredible journey Superstore has been. She said she loves all the cast and crew and the fans and she is so grateful to everyone for what it has become. Santos revealed that the show has not only had a major impact on his career bit his personal life as well, and that it will be cherished by him forever. So, it seems the cast are just as upset that our favourite show will be coming to and end. Perhaps in a few years we can hope for a reunion?
13. The crew can take products home
When filming about a store, there has to be a lot of products to fill the store. So, a lot of the products in the show are there because they are meant for product placement, so instead of these going to waste when they are no longer being used, the cast and crew member have been able to take some home.

The perks of the job (as if there weren’t enough already), taking home free products sounds like a pretty good part of the job. Unfortunately thought, Lauren hasn’t felt the advantages of this yet and jokingly revealed that she had only ever gotten to take home a Christmas mug. Sounds like she got the short straw with this.
12. The show tries to be diverse
One of the main aims for the Superstore’s creator Justin Spitzer was ensuring that the show is diverse and includes a huge range of people. He said he didn’t just mean that he wanted to be racially diverse, although of course he wanted this too. He wanted to make sure that there was an array of different opinions on things, to truly replicate real life where people have a vast range of views on different topics.

Superstore’s characters are made up of people of different ages, races, sexual orientations and preferences, different body types and outlooks. And as well as making sure that you are diverse it also allows a lot more plots to come out of the show. That’s where ideas spring from, different life experiences and different opinions and this is what the show channels. He is sure that this is the reason the first two seasons were so good.
11. The pandemic will be included as a storyline
No one knows what Season 6 of Superstore will look like – but we can reveal one storyline that we know will be definitely be included. Wherever we are at the moment, are lives are consumed by coronavirus. It affects us all in one way or another, wherever we are in the world at the moment.

So, producers thought it wouldn’t be right not to include the pandemic in the new season. Plus, although the show is fictional and it is dramatized for our entertainment, it still draws upon the realities of life. Therefore, it would be unrealistic and not relatable to people at the moment if it did not include any storyline about the coronavirus. So, producers decided that was a definite for season 6. Season 6 will premiere on October 29th and we can’t wait.
10. Glenn was supposed to be obsessed with Dippin’ Dots
For each character there are lots of potential ideas ready to use as a character storyline, or just little quirks and habits to contribute to the depth of character. Not all of these get used though and I guess it depends on multiple things whether it makes it to the final show. Our beloved Glenn is not short of quirks that’s for sure, but apparently he was almost set to have one obsession in particular.

Sometimes these ideas remain on paper, sometimes they are filmed and then cut. Another idea that didn’t make the cut was a storyline regarding Glenn. There was a potential idea where Glenn would love Dippin’ Dots so much that one day, he’d pay for tickers to Six Flags just so that he could get his hands on them. We aren’t sure why this one never went ahead but it definitely would’ve been funny.
9. The show isn’t filmed inside a real store
Amazingly, the show isn’t actually filming inside a store. We’ve heard of the phrase ‘it’s all smoke and mirrors’, and in this case it kind of is. Who would ever have guessed? Really, what they have done is created a shop setup on a small soundstage. But of course, the film makers know all the tricks of the trade.

There are mirrors on top of the walls so that It gives the illusion that they are continuing and the store is much bigger. All of the shelves are on wheels too so that they can be manoeuvred to create new aisles and to create different set-ups. Production designer Michael Gallenberg is responsible for most of the tricks on the set of Superstore. He must be a very talented man because no one would ever have guessed Superstore was not filmed in a real store.
8. Season 4’s final required expert help
When the season 4 final episode was being filmed, producers called on experts due to the sensitive nature of the topic. Because It was about issues of immigration and people who are undocumented, this wasn’t an episode that could be written with outside help.

So, the writers invited representatives from Define America to help them with the immigration storyline. They also asked local Walmart employees to talk about their experiences. When such a topic is being filmed it is important that it portrays a realistic experience, so that those who have lived through something similar do not have their experience undermined by an inaccurate portrayal.
7. Ben Feldman almost didn’t do the show
At the time, Ben had been given the script and he hadn’t yet decided whether he was doing the show. In fact, if anything, he was slightly reluctant to do another sitcom. The series he was meant to be doing, called A to Z had just been cancelled and so he was waiting for some new work when he received the script for Superstore.

Due to his series being cancelled he was very hesitant about doing another one and he said he was waiting for a sign. Then, Bo proposed to Cheyenne on the show by doing a rap, and then he dramatically jumped onto the table and declared it was a robbery. He felt so impressed by Bo’s character that after that he wanted to be on the show. That was the sign he needed. So thankfully, when one door closed for Ben Feldman, another one opened.
6. Mateo has become the show’s most loved character
Superstore is full of loveable characters and choosing a favourite is hard. But everybody has that one character that they have a particular soft spot for. So, who is your favourite character? It turns out through polls that Mateo is the show’s most loved character.

According to the public, he was the most popular character and the one that people loved the most. People can’t get enough of him and it seems that he has become a hit with pretty much everyone. It’s no surprise really. But, that’s not to say the other cast weren’t close contenders – it was a close call. So really, the whole of Superstore cast is amazing.
5. The tills were real and working
Although some things on set are an illusion – like the store itself – not everything is. The cash registers are legitimate and are in full working order. When the products are scanned the prices do show upon screen. Kaliko Kauahi who plays Sandra was amazed when she discovered everything really worked.

Whenever she said a price in her script, and scanned the price, the real price would pop up on the screen even if price no one else saw it. She was taken aback by the level of intricate detail that made the show even better. I guess its these kinds of attention to details that really take a show to the next level. And, it means that the cast feel like they are in a real store which helps them get into role much easier.
4. Dina is meant to represent a type of company person
In every job, whatever it may be, there is always that one person who lives and breathes for the company (in the case of Superstore it’s Dina). They seem to take the company mantra by heart and live by the ethos of the company. They never truly unleash their personality along with the rest of the employees.

And, you would never catch them talking about what they were up to at the weekend because they are ever the professional and much too engrossed in their job. They seem to be defined by their role in the job and sometimes you wonder whether they even have a personal life. This role is shown through the character Dina. She is absorbed in her role as a manager and co-workers can’t seem to get to know her no matter how hard they try. The show doesn’t portray this kind of character in a bad light, after all, they are an admirable asset to the company.
3. You can see the Cloud 9 set
Every true fan wants to see set of their favourite show, to see the set and see where the creation happens. You can actually go and see the Cloud 9 set. If you are in LA, all you have to so is drive down Barham and go past Universal and you can see the set of Cloud 9 in all its glory. You will see the infamous Cloud 9 – where all the action happens.

It’s not much in comparison to some sets you see, because it isn’t a real store and the largeness of it is all an illusion. But it’s still impressive, after all, 6 seasons have been filmed here. So, it is definitely well worth a visit to see where the cast and crew come together and make one of our favourite shows. Who knows, maybe you’d be lucky enough to see them filming or catch a glimpse of one of the TV stars.
2. Mateo’s story required the most thinking
Mateo remains undocumented in the show and so he is constantly fearful because of his immigrant status that he could be discovered at any point. It means that all his actions have consequences and so he has to live carefully. When it comes to voting, the show filmed Mateo taking his vote. But writers had to reconsider this as it is an extremely sensitive topic and they felt the show would be suggesting that undocumented people do vote.

With it being such a contentious issue, they didn’t want to appear as though they were trying to send a message, even if it was unintentional. And so, they removed this part of the scene because they agreed in the end that it was too controversial. But they did end up leaving the ‘I voted’ sticker part in. The storyline was a success and so many people tuned in to keep up with Mateo’s journey.
1. Define America reached out to the show
After seeing Mateo’s story start to unfold on the show, the non-profit charity Define America actually reached out the show and asked if they would like help with the storyline. The organisation tries to use story as a force to shift the conversation and attitudes about immigration, identity and citizenship in an ever-changing America.

Both Define America and Superstore wanted to get this storyline right as it is a sensitive and topical issue. Wanting it to appear as real as possible was the main aim. So, this involved thinking of an initial small idea, and then turning it into a real-life scenario by thinking how would this turn out in the real world and illustrating that on-screen. So, Define America helped throughout the making of Mateo’s story.
