The 80-year-old actor played Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter in the legendary sitcom and he is adamant that he doesn’t want the series to ever be remade as the magic that the cast and writer John Sullivan created simply cannot be repeated.
Asked if a reboot would ever work, David replied:
‘The answer there is no.
‘No, no, no, the writing would be the same name, but also don’t forget, one of my flags that I like to wave, is that it’s a team effort, and it’s not just the character of Del and Rodney, and Uncle Albert, or Grandad, as it were.
‘But it was all the other peripheral characters, you know, Boycie, Marlene and all of those, how beautifully played they all were’.
David added that it would be a “dangerous” venture to try and replace the characters that had previously won the hearts of audiences in the UK and across the world.
The Still Open All Hours star told Digital Spy:
‘You’re hard-pressed to replace all those characters who have endeared themselves into the heart of your audience today. So it would be a very dangerous journey to take, so my answer to that is, don’t try’.

Only Fools and Horses has never been rebooted but did spawn spin-off TV series The Green Green Grass, which followed Boycie (John Challis) and Marlene (Sue Holderness) as they moved from Peckham to the English countryside and prequel show Rock & Chips – in which James Buckley played a young Del Boy.
There has also been a stage musical, written by Paul Whitehouse and John’s son Jim Sullivan, with music by late Chas and Dave star Chas Hodges which was a major success on London’s West End.
David’s co-star Nicholas Lyndhurst, who played Del’s brother Rodney Trotter in the show, previously ruled out a revival of the comedy after writer John Sullivan passed away in 2011.
The 59-year-old actor said:
‘We can’t do ‘Fools and Horses’ again as the writers are not there. It will never happen. It ended on a high’.
