The six youngsters on the BBC One programme’s Children in Need eight-day annual charity challenge have been sent home due to safety concerns, but it is hoped Matt Baker and the Team Rickshaw members will be able to continue “safely from home”.

An update posted on the BBC Children in Need website read:

‘The safety of the young people on Team Rickshaw is of paramount importance.

‘As a precautionary measure, a decision has been made to send the young participants home from the challenge today.

The One Show team are currently exploring ways in which Matt Baker and Team Rickshaw can continue the challenge together safely from home.

‘Ahead of the challenge, following medical advice, a set of robust safety measures were put in place to minimise the risk of infection to all of those involved. On site the team was following government guidelines with strict social distancing measures enforced at all times and routine testing was scheduled several times throughout the challenge to ensure early detection and elimination of any Covid-19 cases.

‘During one of these routine tests, a positive result was confirmed amongst a member of the crew and immediate action was taken.

‘BBC Children in Need have considered all of the risks and options and taken the decision to send the young participants home, their health and welfare being our utmost priority’.

This year’s challenge was due to see Matt and the team of six youngsters ride 332 miles within the iconic grounds of the Goodwood Estate in Sussex, as opposed to up and down the UK, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Matt, who hosted The One Show until earlier this year, confirmed in October he was making a comeback for the challenge.

Speaking in October, he said:

‘In a year that has been tough for everyone, I am delighted that we can bring The Rickshaw Challenge back for the 10th year.

‘In the spirit of doing what we can, we’re doing our best to make it as safe as possible for everybody involved and that includes our supporters that would usually come out to see us.

‘So this year instead of coming out on the streets we’re asking people to support us from the comfort of their own homes by tuning in to The One Show each evening’.

Matt left The One Show back in March and he previously cited The Rickshaw Challenge as an example of what he loves about the programme.
