Bake Off Contestants: Our Favourites Over The Years

Bake Off isn’t just about cooking up cookies, breads, cakes and biscuits, let’s be honest, the contestants are the REAL reason we tune into the show (that and Paul Hollywood’s deep blue eyes, of course).

Over the years, we’ve enjoyed getting to know the weird, the wonderful, the funny and the lovely – we’re taking a look back at our absolute favourites!

Selasi Gbormittah

Selasi stole the show in 2016 thanks to his utterly relaxed nature in the tent. Surrounded by panicking bakers, the cool dude manage to stay calm and collected throughout every showstopper. Since leaving the show he’s been busy – launching events and thankfully, baking some amazing delights.

Paul Jagger

Paul’s claim to fame was his lion, which he made out of bread. In fact, it’s so famous that it gets mentioned every single year on bread week!

Val Stones

Val was the hilarious retired headteacher from Doncaster who sang to her bakes. We’ll remember her for her Noah’s Ark biscuit creation and her penchant for constantly dropping her food. Her exit speech was also pretty tear-jerking:

“When you bake, you always bake for a reason. And you’re giving it to people, so you make it the best you can. And you make it with love. Whenever I make anything, I stir love into it, I knead love into it, so when I present it, it’s special. I’m not unhappy. I’ve had a great time with some great people. I didn’t expect to ever get here, never mind be on it.”

Ruby Tandoh

At just 21, at her time, Ruby was the youngest contestant ever to grace the Bake Off tent. Although she didn’t win the show, she made it to the final and had a hattrick of Star Baker awards to take home.

Liam Charles

One of our absolute favourite Bake Off contestants! After leaving the tent in week eight (he quickly became a series favourite), Liam’s career has gone from strength to strength. He’s currently presenting Bake Off: The Professionals alongside Tom Allen, presented his very own programme, Liam Bakes, on Channel 4. Oh and he has a cookbook: Cheeky Treats: 70 Brilliant Bakes and Cakes.

Kim-Joy Hewlett

Like her name Kim-Joy, the loveable baker certainly did bring joy to us all with her gorgeously creative bakes during the 2018 season. With mermaid bread to cat-inspired showstoppers, Kim-Joy recreates her bakes in her cook book.

Tweeting about her first recipe book, she wrote:

“I like to think that the cover is a reflection of what’s inside – colourful photos and positive messages to keep you going.”
