Similar to amniocentesis, CVS involves using a needle to gather tissue from the placenta.

This test can indicate if a fetus has Down’s syndrome or another chromosome-related condition. In doing this, it also therefore identifies the sex of the baby.

It’s available as early as week 10 of pregnancy, and it carries similar risk of pregnancy loss as amniocentesis.
