Britney Spears’ net worth might be $59m, but despite being the one to make the money, she’s not actually in charge of it…
She was hailed the Princess of Pop in the late 90s/ 2000s, and was making enough money to bathe in it. But, following her publicised breakdown in 2008, she lost all control of her fortune (and life).
She was put under a conservatorship, in which her Dad was appointed to handle her finances and daily life.

A conservatorship is appointed for those who are unable to look after themselves, usually people of an older age, or those with ‘dementia-like’ illness.
The courts rules that because of Britney’s mental state, she wasn’t able to take charge of her personal and business affairs, including even custody of her two boys. That was in 2008, and it still remains in place today.
Britney’s independence has been jeopardised since the ruling, which stated that her Dad, Jamie Spears, would control her conservatorship.

Everything from driving her car, to getting married, to how much money she’s allowed to spend, has been in the hands of her Dad since 2008.
As of last year, he actually took a step-down from his role, due to health reasons, but her care manager has since taken over.

She controversially appeared as a judge on The X Factor in 2012, despite not being deemed fit to judge her won decisions.
She earned a massive $15m for her one-season appearance, contributing nicely to her already massive fortune.
Brit began her first Las Vegas residency the year after in 2013, in which her final show grossed $1.1m- the highest ever for a single Las Vegas show.
She kicked off another Vegas residency titled ‘Domination’ last year, but called time on it soon after when her Dad fell ill.

The pop princess couldn’t have had a more successful career, but Brit’s personal life has always been a struggle.
Following her infamous public meltdown in 2008, she was denied custody of her two boys, and still to this day is only entitled to 30% custody.

Given that she still remains under a conservatorship, twelve years on, there’s recently been even more momentum behind the #FreeBritney movement after her alarming posts.
