What many people don’t realise is that The Exorcism Of Emily Rose really was based on a true story…

Anna Elisabeth “Anneliese” Michel was born on 21 September 1952 in Leiblfing, Bavaria, West Germany.

At the age of 16, Anneliese suffered from a ‘severe convulsion’ which led to her being diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Following her diagnosis, she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for treatment of depression.

Sadly her condition worsened over the years and by the time she reached 20 she was hearing voices and couldn’t stand being around religious objects.
The family of Anneliese…
Her deeply religious family appealed to the Catholic Church for an exorcism which took place in 1975. One year later, at the age of 23, Anneliese Michel died as a result of malnourishment and dehydration. Her parents, along with the two Roman Catholic priests who performed the exorcism were found guilty of negligent homicide and were sentenced to 6 months in prison.
