She left her job in the government to join the cast of Love Island, storming into the villa with Elle Brown.

Now dating Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson, Zara has landed herself a role on the show.

As we’ve loved stalking her Instagram since she first appeared on our screens, here is everything you need to know about Zara from Made in Chelsea

Life Before Reality TV

Zara McDermott, from West London, previously worked as a government advisor. Working under Damian Hinds, the Love Island star was a Policy Advisor for the Department of Education.

Before that, she worked for the Department of Energy and Climate Change from September 2015 until October 2017 as an Operational Officer and Correspondence Drafter. Brains and beauty with this one.

She famously didn’t tell her bosses that she was leaving to go on Love Island, instead opting for the old ‘taking a career break’ chestnut.

When entering the villa, Zara explained:

“I’m intelligent, which means I’m quite good at reading people. I’m always analysing people.”

A Bombshell In The Love Island Villa

After entering the villa as a bombshell, the brunette beauty caught the eye of bad lad Adam Collard. She thought she had what it took to tame his philandering ways… but was dumped on day 25 as his head turned faster than a fidget spinner.

With the new girls entering Casa Amor, Darryl and Adam coupled up while Zara watched on from home. Their relationship eventually fizzled out and Adam realised that he did, in fact, want to be with Zara. The pair reunited on Adam’s arrival home and the two dated until February 2019.

Despite the two having moved in together, they ultimately split on Valentine’s Day!

Zara let the news break on her Instagram story, saying:

“I am heartbroken to announce that Adam and I have parted ways. I love him very much and will always have a special place in my heart for him & our time spent together.

“But I know that soon I will be. I will be strong and prove to myself that I can get through this. Love, always, Zara x”

Her Move To Made In Chelsea

After her break up with Adam, Zara started dating boyfriend Sam Thompson from Made in Chelsea. Taking the Instagram once more, she posted a snap of the two kissing.

Soon after that, Zara became a cast member on the reality show, first appearing on Monday 7 October. Bumping into Sophie Habboo and Miles Nazaire in a London Bar, Miles asked how the pair met. Zara explains:

“So we actually me that an event about a year and a half ago. He was a bit intoxicated at the time, and doesn’t remember it.”

Sam retorted:

“She immediately saw me and thought, ‘that guy, I wanna marry!”

Speaking about the relationship, he said:

“Do you know what, I don’t want to say too much, but we’ve been on a few dates, it’s been a few weeks now.

“We’re not exclusive, because everyone in this game rushes everything! There’s no need to. If you rush into things, sometimes you make a mistake and it gets too intense… she’s a really, really lovely girl and she’s incredibly beautiful.”

Her BBC Three Documentary On Revenge Porn

In March 2020, Zara revealed that she had been filming a documentary about revenge porn and her experience being a victim of the crime.

The reality star made the announcement on her social media, explaining:

“Hi Everyone. Some of you may be aware that I have been a victim of Image Based Sexual Abuse, which is also known as Revenge Porn. For those of you who don’t know what this is, it’s basically when one person shares intimate images of videos of another person without their consent.

“I am really humbled and honoured to announce that the BBC and I are currently making a documentary to share my story. My main aim is to bring awareness to this issue, and be a voice for those who have suffered in silence and to help make a change. I am sharing my story and being my most vulnerable, emotional and raw.

“This has affected my life and me as a person tremendously, and for the first time I’m confident enough to properly speak out and share my story. I am nervous to share these intimate details with the world but I hope that it will only make positive change and lessen the blame on us victims. The documentary will be out in a few months time on @bbcthree. Thank you so much❤️”

The X Factor: Celebrity

Zara participated on The X Factor: Celebrity alongside three fellow Love Islanders. Judged by Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh, Zara competed alongside other stars such as Kevin McHale and Megan McKenna.

Talking to her Instagram followers, Zara explained how she had sever stage fright from the age of 14, sharing a sad story from her childhood.

She explained:

“When I was 14 I performed a song that I wrote with a friend at school during a music class. Those who were in my class will probably remember. I got laughed at throughout my whole performance, to the point where I came off stage and swore that was the last time I would ever perform. I was bullied for years before and after that about a variety of things that I won’t go into.”

On the show, the islanders sung an original track, All Or Nothing, which debuted at number 33 in the iTunes chart.

Isolating For The Coronavirus Pandemic

Locked inside for the time being, Zara and Sam are isolating together. They celebrated their anniversary on May 9 with Zara posting a sweet pic of the pair.

All seems well for now, however, the couple have shared a fair few ups and downs. Most notably, there are issues surrounding Sam’s ex Tiff. Despite them being broken up and Sam dating Zara, it seems that Sam still has a soft spot for his ex.

After the two shared a taxi home after a night out, Zara was seriously angry over the whole affair.
