Where Did He Start Off?

James Anthony Patrick Carr was born in Isleworth, London, England in September 1972. He went to Farnham Common School and Burnham Grammar School before completing sixth form at the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe.

He graduated with a first class degree in Social and Political Science from Cambridge.

His first job was in the marketing department at Shell. However, Carr felt that the job was not for him and took voluntary redundancy in January 2000.

After one unpaid pub gig, the now-famous comedian did his first paid stand up gig later that same month.

And the rest, they say, is history.

His Move Into Television…

Carr began hosting game shows Distraction and Your Face or Mine? He has also presented the 100’s series of programmes such as 100 Worst Pop Records and 100 Scary Moments. Each year, Carr also presents the Big Fat Quiz Of The Year.

Presenting 8 Out of 10 Cats since 2005, Carr has also grown popular for the mash up show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

Stand Up Comedy Genius

Since his break into the comedy world, Carr has completed several incredible successful stand up tours.

In 2003, he sold out an entire month’s performance of his show Charm Offensive at the Edinburgh Festival by the second day of the festival.

His deadpan delivery and iconic laugh made him quickly become a comedic sensation. In 2006, his tour Gag Reflex landed him British Comedy Award for the “Best Live Stand Up”.

The Tax Avoidance Scandal

After an investigation by The Times, the alleged K2 tax avoidance scheme came to light which was said to involve Jimmy Carr.

The scheme involved people “quitting” their job to sign new employment contracts with offshore shell companies.

After the allegations came into public spotlight, Carr withdrew from the scheme and apologised for what he called:

“a terrible error in judgement.”

The episode of 8 Out of 10 Cats, broadcast the day after his apology recorded almost double viewing figures of the following week.

What About His Early Midlife Crisis?

At age 26, Carr had what he called ‘an early midlife crisis’ where he lost his Catholic faith. He has since made comments which critique the use of organised religion.

In 2015, he said:

“As for being a Christian, yes, it seems ridiculous now, but I genuinely believed there was a big man in the sky who could grant wishes. Writers like Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins helped change my view, but I don’t go on stage banging on about being an atheist. (…).”

Carr went under psychotherapy to help him with his loss of faith.

What About His Love Life?

Carr currently lives in London with his Canadian girlfriend Karoline Copping who is a commissioning editor for Channel 5. The two have been in a relationship together since 2001.
