His Early Career
Francis was born in Leeds in 1973 and attended Farnley Park High School before studying graphic design at Leeds College of Art. He was originally discovered by TV presenter Davina McCall as he performed a stand-up comedy show. After recognising his talents, Davina encouraged him to pursue a career in TV.
McCall helped Francis to land his first TV role on Dom and Kirk’s Nite O’ Plenty, where he played Bobby – a man who provided tips on how to woo the ladies.
He went on to feature on Channel 4’s Popworld, as well as in ITV’s Whatever I Want.
Major Breakthrough…
His biggest career move came after he starred in his own show, Bo! Selecta. It was here (and a £2500,000 deal with Channel 4 later) that the now-infamous Keith Lemon was born…
Running from 2002-2006, the show featured Leigh’s good pal Davina as well as a host of other celebs (obviously heavily featuring Craiiig Daviiid).

Who Is The Man Behind Keith Lemon?
While we all know loads about the confident Keith, Leigh Francis couldn’t be more different to his fictional character. The TV personality revealed:
“People have said to me I should do more interviews as myself but I feel a bit egotistical sat talking about myself. I’m not Leigh Francis the stand-up comedian. I sell my ideas – so when I’m promoting my ideas I tend to do it in character. I don’t really harp on about my personal life. Not that I’m especially private or anything it’s just I don’t think people are interested really.”
Leigh’s friends get confused by his alter ego and normal personality, as friend Fearne Cotton revealed:
“The margins are now blurring from real Leigh Francis to Keith Lemon, and I am like, ‘Are you in character? Or are you just being you, but being a bit weird?’ He is the loveliest guy. He’s a genius, he just won a BAFTA. He is a genius, a complete genius.”
“There is a difference when you are sat with Leigh (compared to Keith). He’s a dad, he’s got kids and then when he is Keith when he can get away with anything, he is just pushing the boundaries and ridiculous.”

Leigh’s Family…
It’s hard to think about Keith Lemon having kids or even maintaining a relationship (we ALL remember what happened with fictional GF Rosie), but Leigh Francis is a big family man. He married his long term partner Jill Carter in 2002 and six years later they gave birth to daughter Matilda, followed by another daughter Dolly, two years later.
The couple have managed to successfully keep their private lives private and their kids out of the limelight – and that’s the way we’ll leave it!
