Love Island concluded its first episode of the series with a tribute to the star who shot to fame on the show two years ago. The TV personality – who tragically took his own life earlier this year – was remembered by viewers in an emotional image shown after the episode.
After episode one, a picture of Mike was shown with the caption: “In loving memory of Mike Thalassitis 1993-2019.”

ITV2 paid tribute to the late Sophie Gradon in a similar way last year after the announcement of her death.
“Producers wanted to pay their respects to Mike and show his friends, family and fans that he was a part of the Love Island family and is missed deeply by everyone.
“It is a really difficult subject but they wanted to address it rather than sweep it under the carpet or pretend it hasn’t happened.”

Reports had suggested the the Love Island producers would hold back from honouring Mike on the show and instead dedicate the ITV Hub boxset his series featured on to him.
However, they decided to include a memorial image in Mike’s memory to start off series five.
