Howard married a total of three times over the years. His first marriage was to Rosemary Cooper in 1943. The couple lasted 5 years before divorce in 1948.
He then went on to marry Helen Anderson in 1949. This was a much happier marriage lasting 21 years. The couple had three children together, Gunnar, Kirstine and Kaija.
