The name ‘Baton Rouge’ originates from the French ‘bâton rouge’, which actually translates to ‘red stick’… interesting.

The name was granted when the French explorer, Sieur d’Iberville came across a blood stained (red) stick alongside the Mississippi River, the stick was diving the Bayougoula and Houma tribes’ hunting grounds. There we have it. There is a statue in salute to this moment today in Baton Rouge.
