Do you think that the holes are designed to prevent the ballpoint from drying out? You couldn’t be more wrong! The hole is designed to allow a passage of oxygen to flow if the lid was ever consumed or most commonly chewed, causing someone to choke and blocking the respiratory system.

It is reported that at least 100 people die a year in the US due to choking on pen lids! This lead to BIC introducing the hole on all their pen lids in 1991, which lead to other major pen manufacturers to do the same!
