It’s there so it can hook onto nails or screws and measure safely without the tape measure slipping. It’s very handy!

It’s quite obvious when you see it, isn’t it? Imagine trying to mark where your measurement is but not being able to due to your hands being occupied holding the tape measure. A little-serrated edge comes in very handy, and more accurate as well!
