7. Anne Reid (Valerie Barlow in Coronation Street) – THEN
Valerie arrived to Coronation Street in 1961 with her uncle Albert Tatlock after her parents moved to Glasgow, and almost immediately she began dating Ken Barlow!
Despite coming from very different backgrounds, the pair were very much in love and it didn’t take long for Ken to pop the question. Three years later, the happy couple were welcoming little Peter and Susan Barlow into their lives which prompted Valerie to give up working in her salon and stay at home to raise the children.
When Ken was offered a teaching job in Jamaica in the early ’70s, the Barlows decided to start a new life in the sun, but sadly the night before they were due to leave, Valerie was died from a fatal electric shock.
Following a break from television which she used to raise her son, Anne Reid made a big return when she appeared in popular UK shows such as Dinnerladies, Casualty and Doctor Who!
More recently she has starred alongside Alison Steadman and John Cleese in the BBC comedy series, Hold the Sunset and later this year the 83-year-old is set to co-star in Years and Years and Sanditon!
