Steve Drain – THEN
Remember me mentioning that Shirley was excommunicated from the church by a board of eight male members? Well, Steve is one of those guys. Drain and his family were the only members of the church to have no blood or marital relation to the leading Phelps family – which makes their decision to join all the more weird, as they apparently did it off their own bat – especially since Steve was actually quite liberal before joining.
Steve is still a member of the church and its board today, actively promoting women’s “inferiority” (and my blood boils just typing that) which is apparently one of the reasons he kicked poor Shirley out. His extra-curricular activities include film-making – which is actually how Drain discovered the church in the first place: he was making a documentary focusing on a critical view of the church, which resulted in him joining it. How’s that for irony?
