Shirley Phelps-Roper – THEN
Shirley is the daughter of Fred and, undoubtedly, in the beginning was probably raised to take over her father’s legacy of running the church and its views; she also became a lawyer under the family’s law firm, and her whole demeanour says Wicked Witch to me. Believe it or not, there was actually a church column where people sent “Dear Shirley” emails – hopefully not for advice on their love lives – and she was the most outspoken church member, after her father, of course.
By 2014, Shirley’s authority within the group had been challenged, and an all-male board of elders took over her duties instead; but Shirley has kept herself busy by raising 11 children, one of which was born out of wedlock – hypocritical much? She’s also currently banned from entering the UK – and on behalf of the UK, I can say we definitely don’t mind.
