Fred Phelps – THEN
He was the American minister of the church, and also a civil rights attorney – probably not the best vocation for a guy promoting suppression instead of freedom – and his extreme views were at the forefront of Theroux’s documentary. He, for some reason, thought it would be a smart idea to protest near the funerals of gay people – I don’t think ‘disrespectful’ even covers that – and he even expanded his protests to ceremonies, live performances and political events.
By 2013, though, it seemed Phelps had had somewhat of a change of heart – his religious beliefs took a turn, and he was voted out of the church before his death in 2014 due to natural causes. He apparently didn’t have a funeral, and he was cremated as quickly as possible.
