It’s one of Louis Theroux’s most famous documentaries (and who doesn’t have some sort of weird crush on Louis, right?) and its content caused uproar when it revealed that the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas was trying to spread the (ridiculous) message that homosexuality is wrong – apparently writing it in a stupid font on a big banner somehow makes it true, of course. Let’s see which family members changed their ways, and which ones didn’t…
Megan Phelps-Roper – THEN
Megan is the granddaughter of Fred, and was raised in the Westboro Baptist Church with her family; she did very well for herself in her education, graduating from university and working for her family’s law firm, but she still had her arm twisted into attending protests and sharing the beliefs of the church. Fortunately, the girl saw sense, and she made a public departure from the church with her sis, Grace.
Unsurprisingly, her family are being a bit stubborn about her leaving and have apparently cut all ties with her. Now, Megan openly speaks about her time at the church and promotes equality, using Twitter as a main platform, and has also given a TED talk on the subject. She’s also said recently that she has now lost her faith – and I’m not surprised, really, when it’s shoved down your throat like that!
