Corny Collins (James Marsden) – THEN

On first glance, Corny Collins may seem like the male counterpart of Amber or even Velma – dashing grin, extroverted and eager to please. But he was a good guy. Yeah, sure, he had to maintain a sort-of friendship with Amber so that she wouldn’t try to overtake him at every opportunity but it was all good for a cause. As long as he was in control of his show, he could allow black characters to take part and even dance on his stage. Would Velma or Amber have allowed that? Nope!

Since Hairspray, James has bagged some pretty cool roles including Prince Edward on Enchanted, Cyclops in X-Men, and good guy Teddy in HBO’s Westworld. He’s currently set to star in the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film!
