5. Animals are left abandoned in zoos when Natural Disasters strike
It might not have ever crossed your mind, but what happens to animals in zoos when there is a flood, hurricane or wildfire? They are often left without any help or ways to escape as they are penned into their cages. An example of this was during Hurricane Katrina: most of the 10,000 aquatic animals died at the Audubon aquarium in New Orleans after the power failed and keepers had to leave. Zoo Miami decided to leave their animals in their enclosures during Hurricane Irma.
They said:
“We don’t evacuate our animals since hurricanes can change direction at the last minute and you run the risk of evacuating to a more dangerous location. ”
