5. Mia Hamm – THEN
In the world of football/soccer, Mia Hamm has very few peers. A two-time Olympic gold medallist and a World Cup winner, the now-retired forward is viewed as an absolute icon of the beautiful game.
At the time of her retirement in 2004, Hamm was easily the highest scoring international player – either female or male – in football history; her record of 158 goal finally being broken in 2013.
Nowadays, Mia’s reach goes far further than just United States soccer. While she is indeed a co-owner of Los Angeles FC, Hamm is also an ambassador for Barcelona and is on the board of directors for Roma.
In addition to this, Hamm is the founder of the Mia Hamm Foundation that is dedicated to raising funds for bone marrow treatment.
