6. Wayne Gretzky – THEN

He may be Canadian, but few sports stars have had such an impact in the United States – and the world, for that matter – than Wayne Gretzky. After all, you know someone is just a little bit special if they’re given the nickname of The Great One.

Taking in stints at the Indianapolis Racers, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and finally the New York Rangers, Gretzky is seen as the greatest hockey player ever. So much so, his retirement in 1999 saw the NHL retire his famed 99 jersey across all league teams; something which had never happened before and has never happened since.

Since 2016, Gretzky has been a partner in the Edmonton Oilers and is vice-chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group. In other business ventures, The Great One is part-owner of the Wayne Gretzky Estates winery and distillery and the Wayne Gretzky restaurant chain.
