His dad abandoned his family when Stephen was just a toddler. This in turn had a deep psychological effect on his childhood because he always thought his mum would do the same:

“From a very early age, I wanted to be scared…I wanted an emotional engagement with something that was safe, something I could pull back from.”

His first part-time job was pumping petrol and he went on to cleaning laundry and later working as an English teacher.
