13. Ham House, Surrey
The Duchess of Lauderdale (Elizabeth Murray) inherited this huge house from her father in the 17th and she still lives there now…
Famous friends
She was famously friends with Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II but near the end of her life she was poor and felt like a prisoner in her own home…

Ham House is owned by National Trust so anyone is free to visit and they have special after-hour tours too – not for the faint-hearted!
Mirror mirror on the wall
Visitors have avoided looking in a certain mirror, fearful that she’ll stare back at them. Someone should take one for the team and see if she’s in there…

Apparently there’s also a particular stair where someone reported being pushed off and had to rebalance himself on the step…
Mind your manners
Ham House’s staff also say “good afternoon, your ladyship” before they enter – better to be safe than sorry!
