4. Speke Hall, Liverpool

This is another occurrence where the spooky stories don’t match up with history – but regardless, it’s still a place we’d very much like to avoid at night!

Lady Mary (Downton Abbey, anyone?) married a guy called Lord Sidney in the 1730s, who gambled away all their fortunes.

The story goes that Lady Mary was so angry about the whole thing, she threw her baby out the window and then killed herself.

Sources recorded about Lady Mary claim differently – that she actually outlived her husband and her son lived til his 60s.

Whatever the real story, encounters with the ghosts of Speke Hall are still very spooky – the Great Hall has people feeling nauseous on entry and children are heard crying in empty rooms…

Arguably, the scariest ghost here is the figure who actually talks to you in the dead of night and whispers a sinister “get out” that has you running straight for the hills…
