One Hit Wonders We Still Remember 40 Years Later
Wasn’t it brilliant when we tuned into Radio 1 to catch the chart show. Who was going to be number 1 this week? The tension was unbearable. After the countdown, all was revealed and Carl Douglas with ‘Kung Foo Fighting’ won the coveted title. His life would change for ever…..or not. We never heard as much as an octave from him again. He wasn’t the only one hit wonder.

If you weren’t depressed before you played the single, then you certainly would be after 3 minutes. It was about his dog dying and the words were very poignant. Not the best song to boogie to in your bedroom.

There were quite a few novelty records that drove us mad, but we ended up humming them over and over again. The most annoying ones were the tracks that stuck in your head the most.

Why the heck they played this at the disco I do not know. I didn’t want to hear about the guy who was proud of his anatomy! After all, I was barely a teenager and didn’t need corrupting.

To liven things up and get us on the dance floor, we wanted something a bit wild and funky. I hadn’t practised moving and grooving in my bedroom for nothing.
Wild Cherry – Play That Funky Music
There was a horrendous song, almost too embarrassing to mention. The clue is that they picked up litter on Wimbledon Common. Shame on you if you remembered/didn’t remember it was the Wombles.
