Hair Raising Stories Bring Out The Best Styles Of The 70s
There were definitely some iconic hairstyles during this decade, many transpiring from films and television programmes. The big, stand out one would have to be the Farah Fawcett mane of locks. Appearing in Charlie’s Angels, Jill Munroe’s hair made more of an impact than her acting. She was the only woman in history to chase the villain, get thrown about and fall in a ditch, yet her tresses were still perfectly in place.
Perms – the biggest hair trend ever
We suffered to look this good. Hours at the hairdressers, stinking of ammonia, eyes smarting and tighter than tight rollers, but well worth it. The finished result was dozens of tiny curls, making our hair so voluminous that you could easily hide a kitten in there. We had to use a special ‘pick’ comb to tease the waves, or else we were faced with an afro, the size of a garden hedge.

If you were a fan of ‘The Avengers’, then you would be familiar with the purdey style. Commonly known as a bowl cut, only elegant women such as Joanna Lumley, could carry it off. If you had the type of hair that stuck out and had a mind of its own, then you would do best to have a rethink.
Purdey – Is that your real hair
Rod Stewart, David Bowie and Paul McCartney were sporting a new hairstyle, the mullet. Whilst these three icons looked incredible, the lads at school didn’t carry it off the same way. It was an unusual cut, short at the sides and long at the back and, unless you were a cool dude, it was wrong on every level.

I remember a boy in 6th form that all us younger girls fancied. Yes, he had a mullet but it was shiny and bouncy and he looked like he belonged in a shampoo advert. He was always looking at his reflection in the windows at school and rearranging his hair. Word got around that he used ‘Silverkrin’ hairspray and, strangely, that made me like him more!
Mullets aren’t only fish
As a teenager, I’m sure you, like me, had to get your hair just right before you ventured outside. My new hairdryer, with attachments, curling tongs and round brush were my best friends. I couldn’t live without them. If only life was so simple now!
