Northern towns and cities do make up much of this list, and they are likely the places you think of when you think of alcohol. But the south has some surprises in store too…

54. Derry

Our first visit to Northern Ireland, another city that is struggling to control alcohol consumption…

It may, however, be a case of the whole population being tarred by the few. The Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland said in 2017 that: 20% of Northern Irish drinkers consume 70% of the alcohol. That’s a lot of Guinness!

53. Doncaster

This Yorkshire town is another that has hidden depths when it comes to alcohol consumption…

Figures from 2013 showed that 13% of Doncaster drinkers consume heavy levels of alcohol, that may put their health at risk.

52. Dudley

A fairly innocuous West Midlands town, but it is in fact the pub and bar capital of the region! It has 1034 people per pub/bar, which is the best across the West Midlands.

I know where I’m thinking of moving to! Although quite a few seem to be closing down now…
