12. The origins of ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’
Robert B. Sherman was the lyricist for the film. For a good while, he struggled to think of a good catchphrase for the character of Mary Poppins.

The idea sprung upon him on the day that his son returned from school, informing him that he’d had the polio vaccine

When he asked if the administration of the vaccine had hurt, Sherman’s son Jeff replied:

“No. They just gave it to me on a cube of sugar and I swallowed it down.”
And so the song was born
Sherman naturally thought this sounded especially perfect, and tried the idea on his brother the very next morning.
