We all know the drill for watching a horror movie…You sit down, get the popcorn at the ready, a huge blanket (to keep warm) and prepare to be scared and terrified – with that blanket ready to be used as a shield if needs be.
It all starts off ok, but by the end you come to the realisation that you are not going to sleep for the next year…and the bedroom lights will be firmly left on for the foreseeable.
And yes, shadows and noises at night make you jump more than they should, but you just reassure yourself, none of it is real, it was just a film! Despite the fact most of the happenings are completely realistic…
So what if it wasn’t just a film? What if the film was actually inspired by events that really happened? These movies just got a whole lot more horrifying, that’s for sure…
1. The Exorcist
A oldie, but definitely a goody! This 1973 film has been widely praised as one of the best horror movies of all time.
What an excellent day for an exorcism
The film was adapted from a book by William Peter Blatty. And this book was inspired by an exorcism that took place back in 1949…

Exorcisms were apparently performed by Catholic priests on a boy, called Roland Doe, who exhibited strange behaviour and extreme strength – which was put down to him being possessed.
With flying objects, shaking beds, and words such as “hell” seemingly forming on the boy’s body during the exorcism, people were convinced they had supernatural causes.
A normal life?
It is claimed that the boy went on to live a normal life…but that doesn’t make it much more reassuring!

Hopefully the filmmakers did add some of their own ideas in, as I’m not sure I could cope if the head-spinning scene actually happened!
Did it even happen?
Much of the information comes from diaries of the priests involved, but sceptics say the boy was more likely to just be throwing tantrums than being possessed by an evil spirit!
