Horror with a difference
Emily Rose is the character who dies after a priest performs exorcisms to try to “cure” her. Her story is told in flashback scenes as the film follows the trial of the priest.

The real Emily Rose
The film is based on the story of Anneliese Michel, who died aged 23 after numerous exorcisms to get rid of her supposed demons.

Michel and her parents had believed she was possessed and sought help from Catholic priests. These priests and her parents were then put on trial, charged with negligent manslaughter.
Lighter sentence
Both in the film and real life, the priest received a lighter sentence than expected. Nowadays the sentence may be a little harsher!
