This Hitchcock thriller famous for its shower scene, music and – of course – Norman Bates. Was there ever a more terrifying motel?

Based on the 1959 novel, Psycho‘s serial killer Norman Bates had many similarities with serial killer Ed Gein.

Bloch, the author, was writing the book as news of Gein broke out. So, although Bates wasn’t fully inspired by Gein and his actions, there were some hints towards him in the book.
I’m Norman Bates!
The apparent similarities between Bates and Gein are surprisingly close, even down to the relationship with their mothers.

Both Bates and Gein were dominated by their mothers’ puritan ways, and psychiatrists even thought Gein might be making a ‘suit’ to become his mother.

This was the idea that inspired the idea of Psycho, with Ed Gein’s story intertwined with it. I won’t look at my neighbours or motel owners the same!
