The plot of the film is based on the Texarcana Moonlight Murders, which happened in 1946.

As in the film, 8 people were attacked, with 5 killed over a matter of weeks.

The film fabricated and changed parts of the real story as, for example, the real attacker wasn’t chased and shot.

The 2014 film essentially revives the same story as the film and real-life, as it follows the “Phantom” attacker.

Just to make the story even worse, the case officially remains unsolved with no one apprehended for the crimes…
