One of the most popular horror films of all time, and a multiple Oscar winner to boot, The Silence of the Lambs can’t be based on fact, can it?!

The plot was drawn from a the Thomas Harris novel of the same name, and not from real life.

The character of Hannibal Lecter however, was inspired by someone Harris met in the 1960s, in a Mexico prison.

The real Hannibal Lecter

Harris based Hannibal Lecter on a doctor who had been imprisoned for murdering a “close friend” (potentially lover) and cut up his body.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Dr Salazar (as Harris referred to him) was also suspected of killing and mutilating some hitchhikers!

At least the real life doctor didn’t eat his victims, so Hannibal Lecter remains one of, if not the, greatest villains in history!
