22. The Battle of the Blackwater
When Stannis was set to invade King’s Landing, it was largely Tyrion who mounted the defence.
Tyrion to the rescue… again
The idea of Stannis’ army storming the capitol frightened many – including Cersei. She spent much of the siege locked away in the Red Keep, scaring Sansa with horrible imagery of a sacked city.

She wanted to make sure that her own children were as safe as possible – this led to her summoning Joffrey away from the battle.
Stannis’ fleet was destroyed
Fortunately, Tyrion had possessed the brains to plan ahead – and lit Stannis’ approaching armada with Wildfire.

The destruction was unmatched – remember, this was long before Cersei used Wildfire to destroy the Great Sept.
A desperate Cersei almost killed her son, Tommen
But Tyrion’s plan didn’t stop Stannis’ attack. It was ultimately the intervention of the Lannister and Tyrell forces by Tywin that led to the Crown’s victory. Regardless, the madness caused by the Wildfire made this one of the series’ truly shocking moments.
