6. Hodor’s ‘hodoring’ origins
We all became increasingly fond over the years of this gentle giant. He featured as an almost constant companion of Bran Stark, carrying and protecting him diligently.
Hodor…
Most people – whether fan or not – recognised him for his constant repetition of the word “Hodor”.

People assumed this simply to be his name, but this is incorrect. Hodor’s real name was Wylis.
Hodor?
During series 6, fans were shocked to discover how exactly it was that Hodor ended up simple-minded, and unable to say anything except “hodor”.

When the White Walkers came for Bran and his companions at the end of the episode, Hodor was left to hold the door – protecting an escaping Bran and Meera.
HODOR!
Meanwhile, Bran accidentally warged (when somebody jumps into another being’s body) into Hodor whilst in a vision. In the vision, Bran watched a young Wylis have a seizure, all whilst screeching the words “hold the door”. These words eventually morphed into “hodor”. This was a horrifying realisation for both Bran and the viewers watching. Hodor perished, and I don’t think anyone has quite recovered.
