The reality TV series that follows the tears and tantrums of groups of ladies living in some of the most affluent neighbourhoods in the world (it’s a hard life). We watch them cry, argue, wine and dine and quickly find ourselves enthralled by their lavish lifestyles and constant dramas.
So, where did the franchise of our favourite guilty pleasure begin? Well, behind the gates of a small Californian neighbourhood lies your answer. It might have started here, but it certainly didn’t end here, with the show now filming the lives of ladies around the world…
But, so we don’t forget its roots, let’s take a look at some of the things you might not have known about the show that kicked it all off, and the original Housewives we all couldn’t help but fall in love with…
1. It hasn’t always been ‘The Real Housewives’…
The mastermind behind the hit series, Scott Dunlop, originally gave it the name “Behind the Gates”…
The OG’s…
Dunlop had the vision of the series, offering a ‘fly on the wall’ insight in to life behind the doors of the most affluent neighbourhoods…

Which was originally focussed on the gated community ‘Coto de Caza’ in the OC (Orange County).
What happens behind closes doors…
But, this quickly turned in to more than just a look in to their homes, so the name was scrapped…

For the franchise to take off, Dunlop knew the name had to be more open ended.
Here come the girls…
And so, ‘The Real Housewives’ was born, which unbeknown to everyone involved, would go on to cast housewives in a host of global communities.
